A drawer need not run on metal slides to work well. In cupboards, chests, and built-in furniture, the older arrangement of wooden runners and kickers remains practical, durable, and easy to repair. It asks for accuracy rather than hardware: two level bearing strips beneath the drawer sides, and two upper guides that prevent the drawer from lifting or tipping as it is opened.
When a drawer binds, drops at its front, or feels rough despite sound joinery, the trouble is often in this relationship between drawer and carcase. A runner that is out of level, a kicker set too low, or a drawer fitted too tightly across its width can spoil an otherwise good piece. The remedy is not to force the drawer into submission, but to establish straight, consistent openings and let the wood have a little room to move.
The runner-and-kicker arrangement
In the usual traditional arrangement, each drawer side bears on a narrow hardwood runner fixed inside the cabinet. The runners support the drawer and carry its weight. Above them sit kickers, sometimes called guides: narrow strips that keep the drawer from rising when it is pulled by its knob or handle. A drawer may also have a web frame or a fixed rail across the front of the opening, but the essential sliding surfaces remain the runners and the lower edges of the drawer sides.
The drawer should rest evenly on both runners. Its sides should be close enough to the cabinet sides that it cannot skew badly, yet not so close that ordinary changes in humidity make it bind. The kickers should clear the tops of the drawer sides by a small but perceptible amount. They are guides, not clamps.
If the drawer is wide, deep, or intended to carry weight, use straight, wear-resistant hardwood for the runners. A runner does not need to be large, but it should be substantial enough to remain straight and offer a clean bearing surface. Avoid weak, short-grained stock or pieces with a pronounced cup.

Before fitting: inspect the cabinet and drawer
Do not begin by planing the drawer. First find out whether the cabinet itself is true enough to receive runners.
Remove the drawer and examine the opening with a try square. Check the inner faces of the cabinet sides, the underside of any fixed rails, and the lower web frame or base. Look for a bowed side, a loose joint, a sagging rail, or old repairs that have altered the opening. In an older cupboard, one side may have moved slightly while the other remains sound. Correct loose construction before adding new runners; otherwise the new work will only preserve an existing fault.
Measure the opening at its front and back, then at several heights. A small variation is common in handmade furniture, but it must be understood before the drawer is fitted. The drawer should be made or adjusted to suit the narrowest useful part of the opening, not forced into the widest measurement.
Also inspect the drawer box. Its front should be square to its sides, and its bottom should be seated properly in its grooves or rebates. A loose or badly bowed bottom can push the sides apart and imitate a runner problem. Check that the lower edges of both drawer sides are reasonably straight. These are the surfaces that will bear on the runners.
Materials and tools
For a conventional pair of runners and kickers, gather the following:
- Straight-grained hardwood for runners and kickers
- The cabinet carcase and drawer box
- A hand plane, preferably a sharp smoothing or jack plane
- Marking gauge and pencil
- Try square and straightedge
- Rule or dividers for transferring measurements
- Hide glue or suitable wood glue
- Clamps, where the construction allows them
- Fine screws or cut nails if mechanical fixing is appropriate to the cabinet
- Paraffin wax for final lubrication
A sharp plane is more useful here than aggressive sanding. Sandpaper can round an edge or leave a hollow in a long bearing surface. A plane allows small, controlled corrections while keeping the drawer side straight.
Fitting the runners
1. Establish a level reference line
Decide where the bottom of the drawer should sit. In a cabinet with several drawers, use the existing web frames, rails, or a sound neighbouring opening as references. Mark the runner height on both cabinet sides from a consistent datum, such as the underside of a fixed rail or the cabinet base.
Transfer the marks carefully. The two runners must be level with one another, and each must run parallel with the cabinet front. A runner that rises towards the front tends to make the drawer climb and bind. One that falls towards the front permits the drawer to dip as it is opened.
Use a straightedge and try square rather than trusting a single measurement at the front. Mark the line at the front and back, then connect it. Repeat on the opposite side and compare the marks across the opening.
2. Prepare the runner stock
Plane the runners straight and square. Their upper faces should be smooth, level bearing surfaces. The exact dimensions depend on the cabinet, but both runners must match one another in thickness and height.
If the cabinet is old and not perfectly square, do not assume identical stock will automatically produce identical results. Dry-fit each runner and check its upper surface with a straightedge. A thin packing piece may sometimes be needed behind a runner, but use it only when necessary and make it full-length where possible. Small shims at isolated points can create a rocking surface.
3. Fix the first runner
Fit one runner to its marked line and secure it lightly at first. Glue may be sufficient where the runner is housed in a groove or supported by a web frame. In other constructions, a combination of glue and discreet mechanical fixing gives useful security. Choose a method consistent with the cabinet and allow for the direction in which the surrounding wood may move.
Check that the runner is straight before the adhesive sets or final fasteners are driven. A straight runner fixed in a bowed cabinet side can still be correct if it establishes a sound bearing line, but it must not push the drawer out of square with the opening.
4. Set the second runner from the drawer, not from guesswork
Place the drawer on the first runner and use it to determine the position of the second. Support the free side of the drawer with slips of wood or packing until it sits level and at the intended height. Then mark the second runner position against the cabinet side.
This method accounts for the actual drawer rather than an assumed measurement. Check the drawer front in the opening: its reveals should be even enough to look intentional, and the front should not sag to one side.
Fit the second runner, then test the drawer repeatedly. It should slide in and out without rocking. At this stage, do not fit the kickers tightly. The first aim is full, level support underneath.

Planing the drawer for a close sliding fit
A drawer requires clearance, but the clearance should be controlled. Too much side play makes it rack and wear unevenly; too little makes it seize in damp weather.
Mark the high or rubbing areas by pushing the drawer partway into the cabinet, withdrawing it, and looking for fresh burnishing or scrape marks. Plane only the surfaces that bear. Usually this means the lower outer edges of the drawer sides and, if needed, small corrections along their outer faces.
Take fine shavings and keep the plane strokes long. Do not remove most of the material at the front alone, even if the drawer first binds there. A front-only taper can make the drawer feel loose when closed and leave it unsupported deeper in the cabinet. Instead, identify whether the binding is caused by width, by an uneven runner, or by a drawer side that is not straight.
Plane the drawer sides with seasonal movement in mind. The broad drawer front is most likely to move across its width, while the side-to-side fit is affected by both drawer wood and cabinet wood. A little clearance at the sides is prudent, particularly in a cabinet that will live through marked changes in humidity. The drawer should not need to be driven home with a hand strike.
If the drawer is already very close but runs rough, avoid over-planing. Often a few passes along the lower bearing edges, followed by wax, are enough.
Fitting the kickers
5. Position each kicker above the drawer side
With the drawer resting properly on its runners, place a kicker above one drawer side. Its lower face should sit just above the top edge of the side. Use a thin slip of paper, a marking gauge setting, or a light spacer to establish a modest clearance.
The drawer should slide freely when level, but it should meet the kicker if its front is lifted. This prevents the common fault in which a drawer rises over a runner when pulled fully open, then jams or drops as it returns.
Mark and fit the kicker parallel with its runner. As with the runners, dry-fit first. A kicker that presses on the drawer side will create needless friction and can make a drawer feel tight only when it is partly open.
6. Test the drawer through its whole travel
Push the drawer fully home, then draw it out slowly. Lift gently on the handle near the middle and near each corner. The kickers should stop excessive lift without rubbing in ordinary use. Check that the drawer does not bind near the back, where a slight twist in the cabinet may reveal itself.
If it tightens only near the end of its travel, look for a runner or kicker that is not parallel with the cabinet front. If it drops noticeably at full extension, the runners may be too short for the drawer’s intended travel, or the drawer may need a stop arrangement that prevents it being pulled beyond proper support.

Lubricating the sliding surfaces
Once the fit is right, apply paraffin wax sparingly to the upper faces of the runners and the lower bearing edges of the drawer sides. Rub on a light film, then work the drawer back and forth. The aim is a dry, smooth surface, not a visible build-up.
Avoid oily household lubricants. They can attract dust, darken surrounding timber, and leave a sticky residue that makes a wooden drawer worse over time. Wax is easy to renew and does not prevent future repair.
A drawer that has been waxed but still binds should be corrected with a plane, not treated with more lubricant. Wax reduces friction; it cannot compensate for runners that are out of level or a drawer that has no allowance for movement.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most frequent error is fitting runners by measurement alone without using the actual drawer to confirm their position. A cabinet may look square and still contain a small irregularity that matters at drawer tolerance.
Another is making the kicker too tight. A kicker should prevent lift, not bear the drawer’s weight. If it rubs constantly, the drawer has four friction surfaces instead of two.
Do not plane the drawer bottom in an attempt to cure side binding. The bottom does not ordinarily guide the drawer in this arrangement. Likewise, do not cure a front drop by packing only the front ends of the runners; this often creates a slope and makes the drawer harder to close.
Finally, resist the urge to pursue an airless fit. A traditional wooden drawer should feel guided and settled, with a little quiet tolerance for the seasons. When its runners are level, its kickers are clear, and its bearing edges are cleanly planed and waxed, it will open with the restrained, dependable movement that suits a well-made cabinet.
