How to Make a Traditional Bench Hook for Safer Hand Sawing

A bench hook is a small wooden appliance that earns its place quickly. It braces against the edge of a workbench, holds a short piece of wood against a fixed stop, and lets the sawyer make crosscuts without chasing the work across the bench.

Its usefulness lies in its plainness. There are no moving parts and no need to set a clamp for every cut. With one hand holding the work against the stop and the other guiding the saw, small pieces can be cut with more control and less fuss. A well-made bench hook is especially helpful when a board is too short to hold safely by hand alone.

The traditional pattern has three parts: a flat base, a stop on the upper face, and a hook beneath. The upper stop receives the work; the lower hook catches the near edge of the bench. The stop and hook face opposite directions. When the saw is pushed forward, the work presses the hook into the bench edge rather than sliding the whole appliance away.

Choose sensible proportions

A bench hook need not be large. For ordinary small joinery and crosscutting, a base about 250 to 300 mm long and 180 to 220 mm wide is a useful starting point. This gives enough area to support a small board while remaining light enough to lift and store.

Use a base around 18 to 25 mm thick. A thicker base feels more solid and is less likely to flex, but a thin, stiff sheet of good plywood also works well. The upper stop should be substantial enough to bear repeated pressure: roughly 35 to 50 mm high and at least as thick as the base is a practical arrangement. The lower hook may be lower, since it only needs to engage the bench edge securely.

Hardwood is traditional and durable, particularly for the stop, which receives saw contact over time. Straight-grained offcuts are ideal. Quality plywood makes an excellent base because it stays flat and resists seasonal movement. If using solid wood for the base, choose a stable board and avoid a piece with a pronounced cup or twist.

The stop should run across the full width of the base. It can be square to the long edges for straightforward crosscuts, or it can incorporate a marked 45-degree guide for simple mitres. For a first bench hook, a square stop is the most useful and least complicated form.

Materials and tools

For one basic bench hook, gather the following:

  • A base of straight-grained hardwood or good plywood.
  • A hardwood or plywood stop for the top face.
  • A smaller hardwood or plywood hook for the underside.
  • Wood glue.
  • Short screws, brads, or both.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Wax or oil, if a light finish is wanted.

You will also need a rule or tape, pencil, square, saw, drill and bit for pilot holes, screwdriver, and a means of smoothing edges. A block plane is useful but not essential.

Avoid using screws so long that their points emerge through the working face. Brass or steel screws are both suitable, but countersink their heads so they cannot catch a board or a saw handle. Brads can hold parts while glue cures, though screws make the assembly easier to repair or renew later.

Prepare the parts

1. Cut and flatten the base

Cut the base to the chosen size. Check that it sits flat on the bench. If it rocks, identify the high corner or twist and correct it with a plane or sanding block. This is worth doing carefully: a bench hook cannot hold work steadily if its own base is unstable.

Soften only the sharp outer edges. A small chamfer or a few passes with sandpaper will make it more comfortable to handle without rounding the surfaces that need to register against the bench and workpiece.

2. Make the upper stop

Cut the stop to the full width of the base. Its bottom edge should be straight, since this is the surface against which work will rest. Plane or sand this edge until it is clean and square to the stop face.

Lay the stop across one end of the upper face of the base. It is usually placed close to the end, leaving a narrow margin beyond it. This margin supports the stop and protects its end grain, but it should not be so wide that it reduces the available sawing area.

Check the stop with a square before fixing it. A stop that is not square to the long sides will make every square crosscut harder to judge. Mark its position with a pencil line.

3. Make the lower hook

Cut a second strip for the underside. It should also run across the full width, but it need not be as tall as the upper stop. Position it near the opposite end of the base.

The hook must project far enough below the base to catch the near edge of your workbench. Before fastening it permanently, hold the base in its intended position and test the fit against the bench. A hook that is too shallow may slip free; one that is unnecessarily deep can make the bench hook awkward to use on different surfaces.

The faces of the top stop and lower hook should point in opposite directions. Place the top stop toward the far side of the bench hook, where the workpiece will be pressed, and the lower hook toward the near side, where it catches the bench edge.

Assemble the bench hook

4. Glue and fasten the stop

Apply a modest, even coat of glue to the bottom of the upper stop. Set it on its marked line and clamp it if convenient. If clamps are unavailable, hold it firmly in position while driving two or three brads, then reinforce it with countersunk screws after drilling pilot holes.

Fasten from the underside of the base where possible. This leaves the upper surface clear of screw heads and reduces the chance of a saw touching metal. If screws must be driven from above, sink them well below the surface and keep them away from the usual saw line.

Wipe away squeezed-out glue with a damp cloth before it hardens. Dried glue ridges can prevent work from sitting fully against the stop.

5. Attach the lower hook

Turn the base over and glue the lower hook in place at the opposite end. Ensure it is parallel to the top stop. The hook does not need the same exact squareness as the stop, but a crooked hook can make the appliance sit awkwardly against the bench.

Again, pilot drill before screwing, especially in hardwood. The screw heads should sit flush or below the underside surface where they will not scratch the bench. Let the glue cure according to its instructions before putting the hook under hard use.

6. True the working edges

Once assembled, set the bench hook on the bench and press it against the edge. Place a short board against the stop. The board should sit without rocking, and the appliance should remain steady when pushed forward.

If a small gap appears beneath the workpiece or along the stop, correct it now. A few careful plane strokes across the stop face can make a noticeable difference. Do not try to compensate for a poor stop by gripping the work harder; the point of the bench hook is to reduce that need.

The sacrificial kerf and why it matters

A bench hook is meant to be cut into. When making a crosscut, the saw will eventually pass through the work and enter the top stop and base. This first kerf is useful: it marks the natural saw line and gives later cuts a visual reference.

Make the initial kerf deliberately with the saw you expect to use most often. Place a scrap piece against the stop, begin the cut slowly, and saw down only until the blade has entered the base a little. Do not cut so deeply that the base becomes weak.

Over time, the kerf will widen. This is normal. When it becomes untidy or begins to affect support for small pieces, either make a fresh kerf a little to one side, glue a patch into the old slot, or replace the stop. A bench hook is a working tool, not a precious object.

How to use it safely

Set the lower hook against the near edge of a sturdy bench. Place the stock flat on the base and press its end firmly against the upper stop. Hold the stock down and back with your non-sawing hand, keeping fingers well away from the expected path of the blade.

Start the cut with light, controlled strokes. Once the kerf is established, use the full length of the saw as appropriate. Let the stop take the forward pressure rather than forcing the work with the hand that is holding it.

For a square cut, align the saw with a pencil line on the work and use the bench hook’s existing kerf as a general guide. The kerf is not a substitute for marking and watching the line, particularly if the saw has drifted or the hook has seen varied use.

A bench hook is best suited to crosscutting small boards, trimming ends, and supporting pieces for controlled hand-saw work. It is not a substitute for proper support when ripping a long board, and it should not be used when the work is too narrow to hold with fingers safely clear of the blade. In that case, use a longer holding block, a clamp, or another suitable jig.

A simple mitre option

A basic bench hook can be adapted for occasional 45-degree cuts without becoming a full mitre box. Draw a clear 45-degree line across the upper face, leading into the sacrificial area near the stop. Saw a shallow guide kerf along that line with a backsaw, stopping before you weaken the base too much.

This arrangement can help with small mouldings or light trim, but it asks for a careful hand. A dedicated mitre box is better when repeated angles must be consistent, when pieces are delicate, or when the saw needs guidance on both sides of the work.

Another approach is to keep the bench hook square and place a small removable 45-degree fence against its stop. This preserves the main crosscutting surface and lets the accessory be replaced if it becomes worn.

Finish and care

A bench hook needs no elaborate finish. A light coat of oil or paste wax can reduce glue adhesion and make dust easier to wipe away. Keep finish off the stop face if it makes the surface slippery; bare, clean wood often grips the work better.

Do not leave thick finish in the saw kerf. It can transfer to a blade and obscure the guide. A simple sanding to remove splinters, followed by a modest wipe of wax on the outer faces, is generally enough.

Store the bench hook where it will stay dry and flat. Inspect it occasionally for a loose stop, cracked base, or proud screw head. These are small repairs, and attending to them early keeps the hook dependable.

Mistakes worth avoiding

  • Reversing the hook and stop. The lower hook must catch the bench edge opposite the upper stop, so forward sawing pressure stabilizes the appliance.
  • Using a warped base. Even a carefully fitted stop cannot overcome a base that rocks on the bench.
  • Making the stop too low. A low stop gives little bearing surface and allows stock to ride upward under saw pressure.
  • Leaving fasteners exposed. A saw striking a screw can damage both blade and workpiece. Keep screws outside the usual cutting zone and below the surface.
  • Cutting an excessively deep kerf. The saw slot should guide work, not divide the bench hook into two weak halves.
  • Holding stock near the blade. Arrange the work, hand position, and saw line before beginning. If there is not enough safe room for the hand, change the setup.

A traditional bench hook is modest enough to make in an afternoon, yet it teaches several sound workshop habits: work from a square reference, respect grain and flatness, keep fasteners out of tool paths, and let a simple fixture do the holding. Once it has gained its first few saw marks, it becomes more useful rather than less.
