Lead came stained glass is built as a small framework rather than assembled as a skin of solder. Each piece of glass sits in the channel of an H-shaped lead strip, called came, and the joined network is later soldered and cemented into a firm, weather-resistant panel.
For a first attempt, choose a compact geometric design: a border around four to twelve pieces, with no sharply pointed glass shapes and few meeting lines. A small panel reveals the essential method without demanding the weight, reinforcement, and handling needed for a large window.
Copper foil experience is useful, especially for glass cutting and soldering, but lead came has its own character. The fit is more structural, the drawing is used differently, and the final cementing step is not optional decoration. It is what closes the channels, stiffens the panel, and gives the work its traditional finish.
What lead came does differently
Lead came is generally supplied in straight lengths with a central channel and two flanges, or leaves. The channel receives the edge of the glass. Came is described by its profile and its face width: narrow-faced came gives a fine line, while wider-faced came gives a more emphatic graphic line and can suit a simple, bold design.
For a beginner panel, use came intended for stained-glass work and select one profile for the interior lines and a sturdier border came for the outside. The border must hold the panel together and provide a sound edge for later installation. Avoid treating ordinary solder as the source of strength. Solder secures the intersections; the fitted lead network and cemented joints do the larger structural work.
A lead-came panel also begins with a full-size drawing, traditionally called a cartoon. This is not merely a sketch. It is the working map for cutting, assembling, and checking the panel.

Materials and tools for a first panel
Gather the materials before cutting any glass. Interruptions are especially inconvenient once the panel is partly assembled on the bench.
You will need stained glass sheets, lead came, solder, appropriate flux, stained-glass cement, glazing nails, and safety gloves. A glass cutter, running pliers or grozing pliers, a flat work board, straightedges, a fine permanent marker, a soldering iron, a came cutter or side cutters, and a small stiff brush are also useful.
Prepare a firm work surface that can take temporary nails. Traditional assembly is often done on a wooden board, with strips of wood or other straight stops nailed along two adjacent sides of the full-size pattern. These fixed edges establish a square corner from which the panel can grow.
Lead and workshop safety
Lead came should be handled deliberately rather than fearfully. Do not eat, drink, smoke, or touch food while working. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling lead, before leaving the workspace, and especially before eating. Keep lead dust out of the air: do not sand, grind, or file lead unnecessarily, and clean the bench with a damp disposable cloth rather than sweeping dry dust around.
Flux and soldering also deserve care. Work with ventilation, keep the hot iron in a stable stand, and avoid breathing fumes rising from flux. Wear eye protection when cutting glass. Gloves can protect hands while handling sharp glass and came, though some makers remove them for fine cutting work; if you do, handle each edge with attention.
Keep children and pets out of the work area, and store offcuts, solder, and cement securely.
Plan the cartoon and choose the glass
Draw a panel that is comfortably smaller than your available bench. A square, rectangle, or simple diamond arrangement is easier than a circular panel. Keep the design symmetrical where possible. Straight cuts and gently curved lines are more forgiving than deep internal curves.
Draw the pattern at full size on sturdy paper. Mark each glass piece with a number, and mark the intended colour or texture. Add a clear outer boundary. The lead lines themselves occupy space, so the pieces of glass must be cut smaller than the lines on the drawing might first suggest.
A useful approach is to make two copies of the cartoon. Keep one intact beneath the assembly. Use the other as a cutting pattern, cutting it into individual templates if desired. When using paper templates, remember that each glass piece needs allowance for the heart, or channel, of the surrounding came. If you cut every piece precisely to the visible shape on the complete drawing, the finished panel may become oversized or force the came open.
Beginners often find it simplest to work from the full-size drawing while checking each piece against its neighbouring came as the panel grows. The aim is not mathematical perfection at the first cut; it is a neat fit with enough room for the lead to sit naturally around the glass.

Build the panel step by step
1. Set up the assembly board
Place the intact cartoon on the board and protect it with a thin clear covering if needed, so cement and flux will not ruin the drawing. Fix straight wood stops along the bottom and one side of the outer boundary, forming a true right angle. These are your starting fences.
2. Cut and refine the glass
Transfer each shape to glass, considering the direction of ripples, streaks, or textures as part of the design. Score once with a confident, continuous line, then break the glass cleanly. Use grozing pliers carefully to remove small unwanted projections.
Place each cut piece on the cartoon as you go. Do not force a poor cut into place later. A small correction at the glass stage is easier than a persistent gap buried inside lead.
3. Cut the border came and first internal leads
Cut a length of border came for the bottom edge, then one for the side edge, and place them against the wooden stops. Add the first piece of glass into the corner.
Cut lead came so the ends meet neatly at intersections. A came cutter gives clean, square cuts; side cutters can work but may compress the profile. Where one lead butts into another, remove only what is necessary for the pieces to sit flat. The goal is close contact, not crushed lead.
Build outward piece by piece. Slide glass into the channel, add the next lead, then set the following glass. Use glazing nails sparingly to hold the panel snugly against the stops and prevent shifting. Drive them beside the came, not through it.
4. Check the fit as you proceed
Every few pieces, look across the panel rather than only down at it. Leads should follow the drawn lines without wandering. Glass should rest fully in the channels, and intersections should meet without large open voids.
A slight irregularity is normal in handmade work. A lead line that must be bent sharply to conceal a badly sized piece is not. If a gap is substantial, recut the glass or replace the affected lead rather than hoping solder will bridge the problem.
5. Complete the border
When all interior pieces are fitted, cut and install the remaining border came. The panel should now sit as a coherent unit inside its lead frame. Check the diagonals of a rectangular panel and inspect the corners. If it has crept out of square, correct it gently before soldering.

Solder the joints
Apply flux sparingly to the joints on one face. Excess flux can spread across the lead and leave a messy surface. With a clean, properly heated iron, touch solder to each intersection and allow it to flow into a small, smooth mound. Do not linger with the iron: prolonged heat can distort the lead, crack nearby glass, or burn residue onto the work.
Solder every lead intersection on the first side. Allow the panel to cool, then turn it carefully. A small panel can usually be flipped with a flat board or sheet placed over the surface, keeping the pieces supported as one unit. Flux and solder the corresponding joints on the reverse.
The solder joints should be secure and reasonably even, but they need not be large. Heavy blobs are not a substitute for well-cut came.
Cementing: the step that firms the panel
Stained-glass cement is worked beneath the leaves of the came after soldering. It fills the small spaces between glass and lead, helps prevent rattle, and makes the panel more rigid and weather-tight. Use a cement made for leaded glass, following its handling directions, particularly regarding solvents and ventilation.
Brush or press cement along both faces of the panel so that it enters the channels. Work it beneath the lead leaves with a stiff brush, then use a small amount of dry whiting or another suitable cleaning powder traditionally used for the purpose to absorb excess oil and help clean the glass and lead. The exact method varies with the cement used, so the product directions should guide the final cleaning and curing period.
Do not expect the panel to look finished immediately. Cementing is a messy stage. Clean the glass carefully, but do not scrub so aggressively that you pull fresh cement back out of the joints. Leave the panel supported flat while the cement sets. Once it has begun to firm, inspect the edges and corners and remove residue from the glass.
Common early mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a complicated drawing. Fine points, tight curves, and many tiny pieces magnify every cutting and fitting error.
- Cutting glass to the drawn lead line. Remember that came occupies width; the glass belongs inside its channel.
- Forcing came around an inaccurate piece. This creates distorted lines and weak-looking joints.
- Using too many glazing nails. Nails are temporary restraints, not permanent structure, and can buckle soft lead.
- Overheating joints. A quick, clean solder joint is better than prolonged heat.
- Skipping cementing. An uncured, uncemented panel may feel loose and is not properly finished for glazing.
- Treating lead cleanup casually. Keep the bench clean, wash hands, and contain offcuts from the beginning.
A practical first-panel recommendation
Make a small rectangular panel with a plain border and four to eight larger interior pieces: alternating clear textured glass and one coloured glass is enough to show the effect of the method. Choose mostly straight lead lines, include a few simple right-angle intersections, and keep the panel for indoor display until you are confident with construction and finishing.
Lead came work rewards steadiness more than speed. The best early panel is not the most elaborate one. It is the one whose glass sits comfortably in its leads, whose lines remain calm and intentional, and whose cemented structure feels quietly complete.
