A doodle is a small drawing with a short memory. It does not need correct perspective, polished anatomy, or a grand subject. Its value is that it can be repeated: in the corner of a diary, beside a date, around a title, or during five quiet minutes at the end of the day.
Start with a pencil or fineliner and the paper already in front of you. Draw each object from two or three basic shapes, add one identifying detail, and stop before the drawing becomes overworked.

A Simple Doodle Method
- Draw the largest shape: circle, oval, rectangle, triangle, or loose contour.
- Add the feature that makes the object recognizable.
- Use a second line for depth only when it helps.
- Repeat the drawing three times, changing size or angle.
- Add color after the line drawing works on its own.

These eleven groups contain more than one hundred starting points. The aim is not to complete them all. Circle ten that belong to your actual week and draw those first.
Using Doodles in a Journal
A tiny drawing works best when it has a job. Use a cup beside a coffee date, a leaf to divide sections, a book beside a reading list, or a small weather symbol at the top of a daily entry. Repeating the same motif across several pages creates a visual rhythm without requiring a new illustration every time.

How to Improve Without Making It Heavy
Keep a page called “visual vocabulary.” Each time you learn a useful little drawing, add one clear version to the page. Practice lines, curves, dots, and simple shadows separately. When a doodle fails, redraw it smaller; reducing scale often removes unnecessary detail and reveals the essential shape.
A bullet journal does not need decoration to function. But when drawing makes you more willing to open the book, notice the day, and return tomorrow, the doodle is already doing useful work.
