A shooting board is one of the quietest useful additions to a hand-tool bench. It is only a flat base, a raised track for the plane, and a fence set square to that track. Yet these few parts make end grain easier to control and make small corrections to mitres far more repeatable.
The workpiece is held against the fence while the plane lies on its side and travels along the board. Rather than trying to balance a plane on a narrow end grain surface, you guide it against a broad, fixed runway. The result depends less on a steady hand and more on the care taken when building the jig.
A shooting board need not be elaborate. A plain, well-made version is often the most reliable: flat stock, a durable fence, enough clearance for the plane, and a track tested before it is trusted on fine work.
What the board needs to do
The essential arrangement has three working surfaces:
- a base, which keeps the whole board flat and supports the work;
- a plane track, usually a raised strip at one side, which supports the plane on its side;
- a fence, fixed across the base at a true right angle to the plane’s path.
For mitres, make a second fence at 45 degrees, or use a removable mitre fence. It is usually wiser to establish a dependable square fence first. A shooting board that squares end grain accurately will earn its place even if it never cuts a mitre.
Choose a size to suit the work you make. A board about 450 to 600 mm long is comfortable for small boxes, frames, drawer parts, and general joinery. It should be wide enough for the plane track, the workpiece, and a little room for your holding hand. A longer board is useful for wider parts, but an oversized jig can be awkward to store and less pleasant to use.

Materials and preparation
Choose stable material
Good-quality plywood is a sensible choice for the base because it resists seasonal movement and is usually flat. A thickness around 12 to 18 mm gives a firm foundation without making the board unnecessarily heavy. Avoid bowed sheet material; a shooting board cannot correct a twist in its own base.
Use straight, close-grained hardwood for the fence and plane track. Hardwood withstands repeated contact from workpieces and the sole or side of the plane better than softwood. A dense, stable offcut is sufficient. The fence does not need to be tall, but it should be high enough to register a workpiece securely—roughly 20 to 35 mm is generally comfortable for small work.
Before cutting, inspect the plane you intend to use. A dedicated shooting plane is pleasant, but not required. A sharp bench plane with a suitable side can work well. Note which side will run on the track, where the blade projects, and whether any projecting lever cap, adjustment wheel, or lateral mechanism needs clearance.
Gather the basic tools
You will need:
- plywood or another stable, flat base material;
- hardwood for the track and fence;
- wood glue and screws;
- a try square that you trust;
- a hand plane with a sharp iron;
- a saw for cutting the parts;
- a drill and countersink for screw holes;
- a rule or marking gauge;
- a straightedge, if available, for checking the base.
A sharp plane matters as much as the jig. End grain is cut rather than rubbed away. Hone the iron carefully, set it for a fine shaving, and make sure the cap iron and blade are secure.
Build the shooting board
1. Cut and flatten the base
Cut the base to its finished size. Remove any rough edges and check it on a known flat surface. If it rocks, find the cause before adding anything else. A small amount of irregularity may not prevent use, but a twisted base can make the fence difficult to set reliably.
Mark one long edge as the plane side. This is where the track will sit. Leave enough open base beside it to support your usual workpieces. For a board intended mainly for narrow frame parts, a work platform of 120 to 160 mm is often enough; broader work benefits from more room.
2. Fit the plane track
Cut a straight hardwood strip for the track. Its upper face should be smooth and free of bumps, because the side of the plane will slide on it repeatedly.
Position the strip along the marked edge. The important point is not its exact width but its relationship to the plane blade. When the plane rides on the track, the iron must project just beyond the inner edge of the track and reach the workpiece. At the same time, the body of the plane should not scrape against the base.
Dry-fit the track and test with the plane before gluing. Place the plane on its side against the strip, lower it as though taking a shaving, and check that the blade can reach into the work area. If needed, shift the track outward or use a narrow packing strip beneath it to create clearance.
Glue and screw the track in place. Drill pilot holes and countersink the screw heads so nothing protrudes to catch the plane. Clamp the strip while the glue sets, then confirm that the plane still runs freely from end to end.

3. Leave a sacrificial mouth area
A shooting board works best when the plane’s blade can pass just beyond the workpiece and into a sacrificial area. This reduces unsupported fibres at the far edge of the cut and helps prevent breakout.
The simplest arrangement is to allow the plane to skim the edge of the base beside the track. In time, the blade will cut a shallow kerf there. This is normal. Do not make the track so high or so close to the work area that the iron cannot clear the cut.
Some woodworkers add a replaceable thin strip in this position. It is a useful refinement, especially if the board sees heavy use, but it is not necessary for a first board. What matters is that the plane can complete its stroke without striking hardware or leaving the work unsupported at the exit edge.
4. Prepare the fence carefully
Cut the fence from straight hardwood and plane its lower edge flat. The face that receives the workpiece should be smooth and square to the base. A slight chamfer on the upper edges makes it kinder to the hands without changing its function.
Do not assume that a piece cut on a saw is square enough. The fence is the reference from which every end-grain cut will be judged. Prepare it deliberately, then check its face with the try square.
For a square shooting board, the fence must stand at 90 degrees to the plane’s travel, not merely look square to the outside edge of the base. The plane track establishes the actual cutting direction.
5. Set the fence with a test cut
This is the step worth taking slowly. Clamp the fence in its intended position, near one end of the board, with enough room behind it to support the workpiece. Do not glue it yet.
Place a straight piece of scrap against the fence and take a light shooting cut. Check the freshly planed end with the try square. If the cut is not square, adjust the fence very slightly and repeat.
A useful check is to plane one end of a wider scrap, mark the face against which the square is placed, then turn the piece over and test again. If the apparent error reverses, the fence is out of square. Tiny adjustments make a noticeable difference, so work patiently.
Once the test cut is genuinely square, mark the fence position. Drill pilot holes, apply glue, and fasten it with screws from below if the base is thick enough. Screws from beneath leave the working surface clear and allow a future repair if the fence is damaged. Recheck with a fresh test cut after the glue has cured.
6. Add a 45-degree fence if needed
Picture-frame mitres benefit from a dedicated 45-degree fence. This may be fixed at the opposite end of the board or made removable so the square fence remains the main working reference.
Make the mitre fence wide enough to support the work, but keep it clear of the plane’s path. Set it by test cuts rather than by relying solely on a marked angle. Shoot two matching mitres, place them together against a straightedge or dry-assemble them, and look for an open joint. Adjust until the pair closes cleanly.
A removable fence can be held with screws in repeatable locations, though any fastening arrangement must sit well away from the blade’s travel. Keep metal fasteners outside the possible path of the plane iron.

Using the board
Place the shooting board against a bench stop, in a vice with gentle pressure, or against a fixed batten so it cannot slide forward. The board should be stable before the work begins.
Hold the workpiece firmly against the fence and flat on the base. Keep fingers away from the plane’s path. Start with light strokes, especially when correcting a small amount. End grain often responds best to a fine shaving and a sharp blade rather than force.
For a clean edge, plane from the supported face toward the sacrificial mouth. If a narrow piece is prone to splitting at the far corner, take an even lighter cut, or first make a small chamfer on the arris that would otherwise break away.
Check progress frequently. A shooting board makes it easy to remove material accurately, but it will still remove too much if used without measurement. For repeated parts, shoot one reference piece first and use it to compare the rest.
Common mistakes to avoid
Trusting an untested fence
A fence fixed by measurement alone may be close but not exact. Always prove it with a planed test piece and a square before calling the board finished.
Making the plane track too tight
The plane needs enough room for the blade to reach the work and for its body to travel without rubbing the base. Test with the actual plane before permanent assembly.
Using a dull iron
A shooting board does not make a blunt plane cut well. A dull edge crushes end grain, increases effort, and can pull fibres from the far edge. Hone first.
Putting screws in the blade path
This is both damaging and unsafe for the tool. Plan the full travel of the plane before drilling, and keep every screw well outside it.
Forcing the work against an imperfect fence
If a workpiece rocks, has a bowed edge, or carries dried glue, it cannot register faithfully. Prepare the reference face and edge before shooting the end.
Care and small refinements
Keep the plane track clean and occasionally wipe it with a little paste wax if the plane begins to drag. Do not leave a heavy coating that could transfer to wood intended for finishing. Remove glue squeeze-out promptly, particularly around the fence and mouth area.
The kerf beside the track will deepen with use. That is expected. When it becomes too wide to support delicate work, glue in a thin replacement strip or renew the working edge of the base. A hardwood fence can also be replaced if it is nicked, worn, or no longer square.
The finished shooting board is not a substitute for marking, measuring, or fitting a joint with care. It is a steady reference that makes those final, small corrections calmer and more exact. With a sharp plane and a true fence, it turns difficult end grain into a manageable finishing operation.
