A small panel is one of the best introductions to copper-foil stained glass. It asks for care rather than speed: a few well-cut pieces, foil placed evenly around their edges, and solder flowed with a light hand. The finished object may be only large enough for a shelf or a small window, but it teaches the full rhythm of the craft.
Choose a pattern with straight lines and no more than six to ten pieces for a first attempt. A square, rectangle, or simple diamond arrangement is easier to fit and finish than a design with tight curves or narrow points. Keep each piece broad enough to hold comfortably while cutting and foiling.
Materials and a simple first pattern
For a panel around 15 to 20 cm square, gather:
- Stained glass sheets in two or three colours
- A printed pattern and plain paper for a second copy
- Safety glasses and closed shoes
- A glass cutter with cutting oil, if the tool requires it
- Running pliers and grozing pliers
- A flat cutting surface, ruler, and permanent marker
- Copper foil tape sized to suit the thickness of your glass
- A fid, burnishing tool, or the rounded handle of a suitable tool
- Flux intended for stained glass work
- Solder and a temperature-controlled soldering iron
- A heat-resistant surface or soldering board
- Pins or small stops to hold the pieces in place
- Paper towel, a small brush, and warm water for cleaning
- Optional finishing compound or wax intended for stained glass
For your first design, draw a square border with a large central diamond and four corner pieces. Avoid lines that meet in a dense cluster. At each junction, leave enough room for solder to form a neat, continuous bead.
Copper foil is chosen by width. The foil should wrap over both faces of the glass and leave a narrow, even margin visible on each side. Very narrow foil makes alignment exacting; a slightly wider tape is often more forgiving for a beginner, provided it does not overwhelm the design.

Prepare the pattern and glass
Print the pattern at its final size. Make two copies. Keep one whole as your assembly guide and cut the second into individual pattern pieces.
Before cutting, mark every piece with a number and note its glass colour. If the design has direction, such as a grain, streak, or colour gradient in the glass, draw an arrow on the paper pattern so each piece is oriented correctly.
Lay the whole pattern on a firm, flat board. Cover it with a clear protective sheet if you have one, so flux and moisture do not soften the paper later. Arrange straight strips of wood, metal, or other suitable stops along two outer edges to make a square corner. These stops hold the glass still during assembly.
Choose glass with the light in mind
Hold possible glass choices near a window before committing to them. Opaque glass reads strongly in daylight but blocks much of the view beyond. Transparent or lightly textured glass admits more light and can make a small panel feel less heavy. A mixture can be pleasing, though a first piece is often easier to judge when the colours are limited.
Look for glass that is reasonably flat. Deeply rippled or heavily textured sheets can be beautiful, but their uneven surface makes foiling and soldering less predictable.
Cut the glass accurately
Place a paper pattern piece on the chosen glass and trace around it with a marker. If your pattern lines represent the finished panel rather than the exact glass shapes, leave a small allowance for the foil and solder seams. For a beginner, it is usually simplest to make the glass pieces fit the pattern closely and keep the foil margins consistent.
Score each cut in a single deliberate pass. Start at one edge of the glass and continue to the other without stopping, retracing, or bearing down excessively. The aim is a continuous score, not a deep groove. A harsh scratching sound or repeated passes usually means the cutter is being pressed too hard or used inefficiently.
Break the glass along the score with running pliers. For a long straight score, align the pliers’ centre mark with the line, then apply steady pressure. Small unwanted projections can be nibbled away carefully with grozing pliers. Work slowly around curves, removing small amounts rather than trying to force a sharp turn in one break.
Lay each finished piece on the full pattern as it is cut. This is the quietest point at which to correct an error. The pieces should sit together with small, even gaps. A narrow gap gives solder a clear seam to bridge; glass pressed hard edge-to-edge can crack when heat reaches it.
Do not expect every first cut to be exact. If a piece is slightly large, refine it gradually with a glass grinder if one is available, or recut it if the correction would alter the shape too much. Never try to hide a substantially poor fit under excess solder. Thick, uneven seams will remain visible in the finished panel.

Foil each piece with patience
Wash and dry the glass thoroughly before foiling. Dust, grinding residue, skin oils, and moisture can prevent the adhesive on the copper tape from holding securely.
Starting at an inconspicuous edge, press the foil around the perimeter of one glass piece. Keep the glass centred on the tape as you go, so the foil overlaps each face by the same amount. Pull the tape gently but do not stretch it. At corners, make small controlled folds rather than allowing the foil to bunch.
Cut the tape with a small overlap when you return to the start. Press the join flat. Then burnish the foil firmly along every edge and onto both faces of the glass. The purpose is not merely to make it look tidy: burnishing improves the contact between foil and glass, reducing the chance of lifted edges during soldering.
Foil all pieces before assembling them. As you work, place each one back on the pattern. This keeps the order clear and reveals whether an edge has been foiled unevenly.
Assemble the panel
Set the foiled pieces into the corner stops on your assembly board. Place pins or small blocks around the outer edges to prevent movement, but do not force them against the glass. Check that the panel remains square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner; equal measurements indicate a square assembly.
Brush a small amount of flux along the copper seams. Use only enough to wet the foil. Excess flux can spit when heated, leave residue, and make the work unnecessarily messy.
Tack solder, then build the seams
Work in a ventilated area. Soldering produces fumes, and flux residue should not be treated casually. Keep food and drink away from the workbench, wash hands after handling solder and flux, and keep the hot iron in a secure stand whenever it is not in use.
Allow the iron to heat fully, then tin its tip with a little solder. Wipe away excess solder on a suitable damp sponge or brass wool, following the care guidance for your iron.
Begin by tack soldering: touch the iron briefly to a seam intersection, feed in a little solder, and let it form a small join. Tack several intersections across the panel before soldering any full seam. These small joins prevent the pieces from shifting when heat is applied elsewhere.
Once the panel is stable, solder the seams on the first face. Feed solder ahead of the iron and move steadily along the line, allowing a smooth bead to form behind the tip. The iron should keep moving. Holding it in one place for too long heats the glass unevenly and increases the risk of cracking.
A good beginner seam is modest and even, not high and rounded. If the solder becomes lumpy, pause, clean and re-tin the tip, then reflow the seam with a lighter touch. It is easier to improve a low, continuous seam than to correct a thick one.
When the first face is complete and cool enough to handle safely, turn the panel over with both hands supporting it. Flux and solder the second face in the same manner. Add solder to the outer perimeter as well, keeping the edge neat and continuous.

Clean and finish the panel
Let the panel cool naturally on a flat surface. Do not cool hot glass with water; sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wash away flux residue with warm water and a suitable mild cleaner. Flux left on the panel can continue to affect the metal and leave dull or pale deposits. Dry the panel carefully, especially around seams and corners.
At this stage, inspect the work in window light. Look for skipped sections of solder, sharp points, loose foil, or seams that have not bonded to both adjoining pieces. Small gaps can be cleaned, fluxed again, and repaired with a little solder.
If you want a darker seam, use a patina formulated for stained glass and follow its instructions carefully. Patina is optional. A clean silver solder line is traditional in its own right and allows the geometry of a small panel to remain clear. After any patina treatment, wash and dry the panel again. A thin finishing wax or compound can be applied if appropriate for the product and allowed to cure before the panel is handled often.
For a shelf display, place the finished panel in a stable stand that supports it along the lower edge. For hanging or window installation, a small copper-foil panel may need a stronger border or support depending on its size and weight. Do not rely on soldered loops alone for a panel that is heavy or likely to be handled. A small first panel is best treated as a decorative piece until you understand the support needed for larger work.
Common first mistakes to avoid
Cutting pieces that do not fit
The usual cause is rushing from the paper pattern to the glass. Check each piece on the full pattern before moving on. Correcting one piece early is easier than discovering that several accumulated inaccuracies have changed the outside dimensions of the panel.
Foil that is off-centre
Uneven foil produces uneven solder lines. Slow down at the start of each piece, check both visible foil margins as you work, and burnish only after the foil is positioned correctly.
Too much heat in one area
Glass does not like sudden, concentrated heat. Tack the panel first, move the iron continuously, and alternate between areas rather than dwelling at a single junction. Let the panel rest if it becomes noticeably hot.
Too much flux or solder
More material does not make a stronger-looking seam. Use a light film of flux and build solder gradually. A calm, even line is usually more durable and more attractive than a swollen seam.
A small stained glass panel rewards repetition. The first one may show a few irregularities, but each stage—scoring, fitting, foiling, and soldering—becomes clearer in the hands. Keep the design modest, attend to clean edges and steady seams, and the finished panel will hold its colour quietly wherever light passes through it.
