How to Sharpen Scissors at Home with a Sharpening Stone

A good pair of scissors is a humble but precise tool. When they begin to drag, snag, or leave a ragged edge, most people assume the blades are worn beyond repair. In truth, scissors can be restored to a reliable cutting state with a sharpening stone and a careful hand. This guide covers the practice — not the theory — of sharpening scissors at home, using either a water stone or a diamond stone. You will learn the correct angle, the proper stroke, how to test the edge, and what mistakes to avoid.

What You Will Need

Before you begin, gather the following:

  • Sharpening stone – A water stone (synthetic or natural) or a diamond stone. For most home use, a medium grit (around 1000 to 3000) works well. Coarser stones (400–600) are useful for heavily nicked blades but require more care. Finer stones (6000+) can polish the edge but are not necessary for a functional working edge.
  • Lubricant – Water for water stones; honing oil or water (check manufacturer instructions) for diamond stones. Never sharpen dry.
  • A clean cloth – For wiping dust and metal filings.
  • Your scissors – Clean them first. Remove any sticky residue, oil, or dirt from the blades with a cloth and a little mild solvent if needed. Dirt on the blade will contaminate the stone.

Understanding the Bevel Angle

Most scissors have a single bevel on each blade. The outer face of each blade (the side you see when the scissors are opened) is flat or slightly convex; the inner face (the side that touches the other blade) has a ground bevel. This is the edge you will sharpen. The bevel angle is typically between 70 and 80 degrees – much steeper than the 20–30 degrees common for kitchen knives.

Do not try to change the angle. Your goal is to maintain the existing bevel, not to create a new one. If you attempt a shallower angle you will remove too much metal and ruin the blade’s fit. If you go steeper, the edge will be too blunt to cut cleanly.

To find the existing angle, hold the blade upright and look at the bevel from the side. The ground surface meets the side of the blade at a distinct line. Lay the bevel flat against your stone; that is the angle you will work with.

Preparation: Soak and Set Up

If you are using a water stone, soak it according to the manufacturer’s instructions – typically 10 to 15 minutes in clean water until bubbles stop rising. Keep a small container of water nearby to keep the stone wet during sharpening. For diamond stones, a light mist of water or a few drops of oil (as recommended) is sufficient.

Place the stone on a non-slip surface. A damp paper towel or a rubber mat underneath will keep it from sliding. The stone should be at a comfortable working height so you can apply steady pressure without straining.

Step-by-Step Sharpening Process

Step 1: Disassemble the Scissors (If Possible)

Many scissors can be taken apart by loosening the central screw or rivet. This allows you to sharpen each blade separately and more accurately. If your scissors have a screw, turn it counter-clockwise with the correct screwdriver. If they have a rivet, do not attempt to remove it – sharpening as a pair is still possible but requires extra care. For dressmaker shears with a set screw or adjustable tension, note the original screw position so you can reassemble correctly.

Step 2: Sharpen the Bevel

Hold the blade with the bevel facing down, resting flat on the stone. Keep the blade at the same angle throughout the stroke. Use your free hand to apply light pressure near the edge – not on the spine.

Draw the blade across the stone in a motion that follows the curve of the blade. Start at the pivot end and pull the blade toward the tip, moving from heel to point. Imagine you are slicing a thin layer off the top of the stone. The movement should be smooth and consistent; do not rock the blade mid-stroke.

After every three or four strokes, check the edge. You are looking for a thin, even burr (a tiny wire of metal) on the inside face of the blade. This burr indicates the bevel has been sharpened all the way to the edge. A burr is a good sign – do not panic. It means the edge is now formed.

Step 3: Remove the Burr

Once a burr appears along the entire length of the bevel, switch to the flat side of the blade. Lay the inner face flat on the stone (no angle) and give two or three light strokes. This simply knocks off the burr. Do not overdo it – excessive flattening will change the fit between the blades.

Step 4: Repeat for the Second Blade

Sharpen the other blade identically, producing a burr and then removing it. If you left the scissors assembled, you will need to work one blade at a time by opening the scissors fully and holding the handle out of the way.

Step 5: Clean and Reassemble

Wipe both blades clean with a cloth to remove any metal filings. Reassemble the scissors and tighten the screw just enough that the blades meet without wobble. Over-tightening can bind the blades; under-tightening leaves a gap that causes tearing. Test the tension by opening and closing the scissors – they should move smoothly with slight resistance.

Testing the Edge

The cleanest test is a single, slow cut through a sheet of lightweight paper. Hold the paper vertically and make one full snip from the base of the blades to the point. The cut should start cleanly without deforming the paper, and it should continue in a straight line without catching. If the cut is ragged or the paper bends before cutting, the edge is not yet sharp. Repeat the sharpening steps, paying attention to maintaining the angle.

For thicker materials such as cardstock or a piece of fabric, the scissors should cut with a smooth, uninterrupted action. If they hesitate or require extra force, the edge or the tension may still be off.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Changing the angle mid-stroke – This creates a rounded, uneven edge. Keep your wrist locked and use your shoulder to move the blade.
  • Sharpening the wrong side – Always sharpen the beveled side, not the flat outer face. Sharpening the outer face will ruin the blade geometry.
  • Over-sharpening – A few strokes are often enough. Once a burr forms, stop. More strokes only remove metal unnecessarily and can make the blade thin.
  • Forgetting the burr removal – Leaving the burr will cause the scissors to feel rough and may damage the opposing blade.
  • Neglecting the pivot tension – Even a perfectly sharpened edge will not cut well if the blades are too loose or too tight.

Notes for Different Scissor Types

Dressmaker shears – These often have a longer blade and a smaller pivot. The bevel angle is typically steeper than kitchen shears. Take extra care to maintain the original geometry, as dressmaker shears are meant to cut fabric with a clean shearing action. Avoid using them for cutting paper or thread after sharpening – a separate pair for fabric is best.

Kitchen shears – Kitchen scissors are often heavier, with a thicker blade and a blunter bevel. They may have a notch for cutting poultry bones – do not try to sharpen that notch with a stone; a round file is more suitable. For the straight edge, the same technique applies, but the wider bevel may require more strokes.

Embroidery scissors – These small, delicate scissors have a thin blade and a very fine bevel. Use a fine stone (3000 grit or higher) and the lightest pressure. A single stroke on each side may be enough. Check for a burr with a magnifying glass if your eyesight is not sharp. Over-sharpening will quickly destroy these tiny edges.

Finishing

After sharpening, apply a drop of oil to the pivot mechanism. This reduces friction and protects against rust. Wipe the blades with a lightly oiled cloth if the scissors are made of carbon steel. Stainless steel benefits from a dry, clean surface. Store scissors in a dry place, away from other tools that might knock the edge.

With practice, you will learn to feel the edge forming under the stone. A well-sharpened pair of scissors is a quiet pleasure – a tool that cuts exactly where you guide it, without effort or complaint.
