There is perhaps no colour more mysterious than indigo blue. Unlike most natural dyes, which simply stain the fibre, indigo undergoes a chemical transformation. The pigment itself is insoluble in water; to dye with it, you must first reduce it—strip away oxygen—so that it becomes soluble and colourless. Only then can it enter the fibre, where exposure to air oxidises it back into the familiar deep blue, locked permanently within the cloth.
This process, called vat dyeing, sounds more daunting than it is. With a few basic materials and a willingness to observe the vat’s behaviour, anyone can produce rich, colourfast blues at home. The key is understanding the vat’s needs: it must stay warm, alkaline, and free of oxygen. Once you learn to read its signs—the colour of the liquor, the scent, the film on the surface—you can keep a vat alive for weeks, dipping batches of yarn or fabric as the mood takes you.
Choosing a Vat Type
The first decision is which kind of indigo vat to build. Three main approaches exist for the home dyer:
Chemical Vat (Soda Ash + Thiourea Dioxide)
This is the most reliable method for beginners. Thiourea dioxide (often sold as a reducing agent for indigo) works quickly at warm temperatures and produces a stable vat with minimal fuss. You add soda ash to raise the pH, then the reducing agent to strip the oxygen. The vat turns from blue to a murky greenish-yellow when ready—a sign that the indigo has dissolved and is available to dye. Chemical vats require careful measurement and gloves, but they are forgiving and predictable.
Organic Vat (Fructose + Lime or Soda Ash)
For those who prefer to avoid synthetic chemicals, a fructose vat uses sugar as the reducing agent. The process is slower and more temperature-sensitive; the vat often needs to be kept between 50–55°C (120–130°F) for sustained reduction. Fructose vats produce a pleasant, slightly sweet smell but are trickier to maintain. They also tend to be less concentrated, meaning more dips are needed to achieve a deep shade. This method rewards patience and a willingness to experiment.
Pre-Reduced Indigo (Indigo Extract)
Pre-reduced indigo comes as a liquid concentrate, already dissolved and ready to add to a vat. It bypasses the reduction step entirely—just add it to warm water with a little soda ash and perhaps a pinch of reducing agent to keep the vat active. This is the simplest entry point, though the concentrate is more expensive and can be harder to find. It is an excellent choice for a single day of dyeing or for testing the process before investing in powdered indigo.
For a first vat, the chemical method with thiourea dioxide offers the best balance of simplicity, cost, and control. The instructions that follow assume this approach.
Materials and Safety
You will need:
- Natural indigo powder (not synthetic; look for 100% pure, often labelled “indigo pigment”)
- Thiourea dioxide (sold as a reducing agent for indigo vats)
- Soda ash (sodium carbonate; not baking soda)
- A large stainless steel or enamel pot, or a plastic bucket (do not use aluminium or iron, which can react with the alkaline liquor)
- A heat source (a portable burner or stovetop; if using plastic, you will need to heat water separately and add it to the bucket)
- Rubber gloves (nitrile or neoprene; indigo will stain skin for weeks)
- A thermometer (digital or glass, reading up to 60°C)
- Scales accurate to 1 gram
- Stirring utensil (wooden or stainless steel)
- Fabric or yarn—natural fibres only (cotton, linen, hemp, wool, silk). Synthetics will not hold the dye.
Safety note: Soda ash and thiourea dioxide are alkaline and should not be inhaled or ingested. Work in a ventilated area, wear gloves and eye protection, and keep the materials away from children and pets. The vat itself is harmless once prepared, but the dry powders require care.
Building Your Indigo Vat
The following recipe is for a 10-litre vat, suitable for dyeing several metres of fabric or a few skeins of yarn.
1. Prepare the water
Heat 8 litres of water to about 50°C (122°F). Do not let it boil—high heat can damage the indigo. If using a plastic bucket, heat the water in a pot and pour it in.
2. Dissolve the soda ash
Weigh 20 grams of soda ash and add it to the warm water. Stir until completely dissolved. The pH should be between 10 and 11. (A pH strip can confirm this, though experienced dyers often skip it for small vats.)
3. Add the indigo powder
Weigh 20 grams of indigo powder. Sprinkle it slowly over the surface of the water while stirring. The powder will float and clump; keep stirring until it is well dispersed. The liquid will turn a dull, muddy blue.
4. Reduce the indigo
Weigh 10 grams of thiourea dioxide and sprinkle it into the vat while stirring. Continue stirring gently for two to three minutes. The vat will gradually change colour from blue to a greenish-yellow or brownish-yellow. This is the reduced state—the indigo has become soluble. The surface may develop a coppery sheen or a thin film; that is normal.
5. Rest and maintain
Cover the vat with a lid or a piece of plastic wrap to exclude air. Allow it to rest undisturbed for at least 30 minutes, ideally one hour. The temperature should remain around 45–50°C. If it drops too low, reheat some water (without boiling) and add a small amount to raise the temperature. Never add cold water directly, as it can shock the vat.
Once the vat has rested, you should see a greenish-yellow liquor with a blue ring at the top where air has oxidised the surface. This is a healthy vat. If the liquor remains blue or grey, the reduction may be incomplete. Add another 2–3 grams of thiourea dioxide, stir gently, and wait another 30 minutes.
Dyeing
Prepare the fabric
All fabric must be scoured (thoroughly washed) to remove any oils, finishes, or dirt. For cotton or linen, boil in water with a teaspoon of soda ash for 30 minutes, then rinse. For wool or silk, use a mild soap in warm water—do not boil. Wet the fibre thoroughly before dipping; wet fibre absorbs the dye liquor evenly, while dry fibre can cause patchiness.
The dipping process
Dip the wet fabric into the vat slowly, ensuring every part is submerged. Use a stick or gloved hands to manipulate the folds so the liquor reaches all surfaces. Leave it in the vat for 10 to 20 minutes. The dye needs time to penetrate the fibre. While the fabric is in the vat, it will look yellowish-green, not blue—do not be alarmed.
Oxidation
Lift the fabric out of the vat and let the excess liquor drip back into the vat. Expose the fabric to the air. Within a minute, you will see it turn from green to blue as the indigo oxidises. The colour will continue to deepen over the next 10–30 minutes. For a pale blue, one dip is enough. For a medium blue, repeat the cycle two or three times. For a deep navy, five to ten dips may be needed.
Between dips, let the fabric oxidise fully until it stops changing colour. Then rinse briefly in cold water and dip again. Each dip adds another layer of colour, building richness without muddying the hue.
Achieving even colour
Unevenness usually comes from one of three causes:
- Insufficient scouring – Grease or residues block the dye. Scour again.
- Fabric floating on the surface – Air pockets prevent contact. Use a weight or submerse thoroughly.
- Rushing the oxidation – If you dip again before the colour has fully developed, the new layer may bind loosely and wash out unevenly. Wait until the colour stops darkening.
For large pieces, fold or pleat the fabric loosely and rotate it in the vat every few minutes. For yarn, wind it into loose skeins tied with figure-eight ties to prevent tangling, and turn the skeins occasionally.
Aftercare and Notes
Once you have achieved the desired shade, give the fabric a final rinse in cool water with a splash of vinegar (especially for wool or silk, to neutralise alkalinity). Then wash in mild detergent and warm water to remove any excess dye that has not bonded. Indigo is colourfast to washing but can rub off (crock) on light-coloured surfaces, especially when new. A vinegar rinse and thorough washing help reduce this.
The vat can be reused for several weeks if maintained. Top up with warm water and a small amount of soda ash (to keep the pH high) and thiourea dioxide (to keep the vat reduced) as needed. When the vat begins to produce a weaker blue or stays blue even after adding reducing agent, it is time to compost the liquor or dispose of it responsibly. Indigo is natural and non-toxic, but the alkaline liquor should be neutralised with vinegar before pouring down a drain.
Indigo dyeing is a craft of patience and observation. Each vat has its own character—some are slow, some vigorous. The reward is a blue that glows with depth, a colour that cannot be replicated by synthetic dyes. Start small, keep notes, and let the vat teach you.
