A router plane is not chiefly a tool for removing a great deal of wood. It is the tool that makes the last small amount of wood agree with a line, a depth, and the surrounding surface.
After a recess has been roughly cut with saw, chisel, drill, or powered cutter, its floor may still rise and fall slightly. That inconsistency matters. A hinge leaf may sit proud at one end, a shelf may rock in its housing, or an inlay may refuse to lie down evenly. The router plane addresses this plainly: its broad sole bears on the uncut reference surface while its cutter reaches into the recess at a controlled depth.
Its work is slow only when asked to do the work of a chisel. Remove the waste first. Then let the router plane establish the final floor.
What the tool does well
A router plane has a flat body or sole, a narrow cutter projecting beneath it, and a depth adjustment. As the sole travels over the original face of the board, the cutter can cut no deeper than its setting. This makes the tool particularly useful where the bottom of a recess must be parallel to the surface around it.
Common work includes:
- cleaning the floor of a dado or shelf housing;
- bringing a stopped groove to final depth;
- levelling a shallow hinge or lock-plate recess;
- trimming the bottom of a half-lap or sliding-dovetail socket;
- making an even ground for stringing or other inlay;
- fine-tuning shoulders and cheeks where a consistent relationship is needed.
A full-size router plane is comfortable on broad work such as housings and large recesses. A smaller model is steadier on narrow edges and convenient for hinges, locks, and small inlay work. Neither replaces the other completely, but a full-size plane with a suitable cutter will cover much ordinary joinery.

Choose and prepare the cutter
The cutter must suit both the shape of the recess and the direction in which it will be worked.
A straight cutter is the ordinary choice for open housings, hinge gains, mortises, and broad recesses. Use one narrow enough to enter the space without rubbing its sides. A cutter that nearly fills a recess may seem efficient, but it can bind against imperfect walls and makes it harder to correct the floor locally. For narrow grooves or inlay grounds, a small cutter gives better control.
Some router planes accept cutters with a rounded, pointed, or specially shaped profile. These are useful when matching decorative grooves or particular inlay details, but they are less versatile than a straight cutter. Begin with the simplest cutter that reaches the work cleanly.
Sharpen the cutter carefully. The cutting edge should be keen, square across its width, and free of a heavy wire edge. A dull cutter does not merely make the work harder; it can tear fibres and leave a ragged, compressed floor that obscures whether the recess is truly level.
Fit the cutter firmly. The bevel normally faces the direction intended by the plane’s design; consult the tool’s arrangement rather than reversing a cutter by guesswork. Set it to project only slightly beneath the sole at first. A light cut is easier to guide, easier to inspect, and less likely to bruise a delicate edge.
Prepare the recess before routing
The router plane needs a sound surface around the recess on which to rest. Mark the boundary clearly before removing waste. A marking gauge is especially useful where a consistent depth or shoulder must be carried from one part to another.
Cut down the walls with a saw, knife, or chisel as appropriate. Then remove most of the interior waste with a chisel and mallet. For a deep housing, it is sensible to work down in stages rather than chopping to the final depth at once. Leave the floor rough but safely above the finished depth.
Do not undercut the walls while chopping. A router plane controls the floor, not the boundary. If the walls are intended to locate a shelf, hinge, or inlay, keep them straight and clean before the levelling work begins.
Clamp the work so it cannot slide or bounce. Support a wide board over the bench or on firm bearers. For a narrow board edge, hold it in a vise with protective jaw liners, or secure it in a purpose-made cradle. The plane must sit squarely and its sole must have stable purchase; poor workholding is often mistaken for poor technique.
Set the depth from a trustworthy reference
There are two practical ways to establish the setting.
For a recess of known depth, set the cutter against a depth gauge, rule, or a gauge block made from a scrap piece. Lower the cutter until it reaches the desired projection below the sole, then tighten the clamp and check it again. A depth stop, where fitted, is useful for repeated work but should still be verified before cutting the finished piece.
For a recess that must match another component, use that component as the reference where possible. A hinge leaf can guide the depth of its gain; an inlay piece can guide its ground; a shelf tongue can guide its housing. Avoid setting by eye when the mating part provides a better answer.
For the first pass, set the cutter shy of final depth. This allows the sole to find the existing high spots without forcing the cutter through too much material. After the floor is broadly even, advance the cutter by a very small amount and repeat. The final setting should be approached deliberately, especially with hinge work and visible inlay.

How to use a router plane, step by step
1. Begin on firm ground
Place the sole flat on the uncut surface surrounding the recess. Let the cutter enter over an area where it will meet wood gradually, rather than dropping it hard into a deep hollow. Hold the handles or body evenly so the sole does not tip toward one edge.
On a stopped recess, begin where there is enough open space for the plane to settle flat. The ends can be brought close with careful, short strokes once the central floor is established.
2. Take light, overlapping passes
Push the plane in a calm, controlled stroke. Do not bear down hard. The sole already governs depth; excessive downward force only makes the tool harder to steer and may mark a soft surrounding face.
Overlap each pass slightly. Work across the full width rather than repeatedly deepening one narrow track. The first shavings will come from the high places. As the floor approaches the cutter setting, the shaving should become more continuous and even.
A router plane may also be pulled toward the body if that gives safer control or suits the layout of the work. In a dado crossing the grain, working from each end toward the centre helps protect the far arris from breaking away. Stop before the cutter reaches the opposite wall, then reverse the work or approach from the other side.
3. Respect the grain at the edges
Within a broad recess, the cutter often works acceptably in either direction, but the fibres at the walls and stopped ends require attention. If the cutter begins lifting or tearing fibres, reverse direction, reduce the depth of cut, or pare the troublesome edge first with a sharp chisel.
For a cross-grain housing, lightly knife or chisel the far boundary before routing to depth. This severs fibres that could otherwise break beyond the intended line. On a hinge gain, take especially short, light passes near the end grain and corners.
4. Advance in small increments
When the first setting has levelled the floor, loosen the depth mechanism and lower the cutter only a little. Retighten it securely. Continue in stages until the tool takes a faint shaving across the full floor at the final depth.
There is no virtue in making a heavy cut. The router plane earns its accuracy through many restrained passes, not force.
5. Check the floor and the fit
Brush away shavings and examine the recess in raking light. A straightedge can reveal a remaining ridge in a wide housing, but the best check is often the part that must fit there. Test a shelf, hinge, or inlay without forcing it.
For hinge work, the leaf should sit flush with the surrounding wood while the knuckle remains clear of the edge. For a shelf housing, the shelf should bear evenly without rocking. For inlay, the piece should reach the floor without being held up by stray fibres or a high corner.
If only one small patch remains high, take a few localized passes while keeping the sole fully supported. If the recess is narrower than the sole’s support area, bridge the surrounding surface with a flat scrap or use a smaller router plane. Do not allow the tool to rock on the walls of the recess.

Particular uses and their small differences
Hinge gains
Mark the hinge outline and depth, score the perimeter, and remove most waste with a chisel. A small router plane is especially useful here because it remains stable on a narrow door or box edge. Work slowly near the stopped ends. The final floor need only be deep enough for the hinge leaf to sit flush; deeper cuts weaken the edge and may leave a visible gap.
Shelf housings and dadoes
Saw or chisel the shoulders first and remove waste across the housing. Then run the router plane across the grain in light passes. Work from both ends toward the middle to protect the shoulders. A level floor gives a shelf broad bearing and makes dry assembly more predictable.
Stopped grooves
Remove waste with a chisel, keeping clear of the stopped end. Route the open portion first. Near the stop, shorten the stroke and approach from the direction that supports the fibres at the end. A narrow cutter can reach closer into the stop, but a final corner may still need careful chisel work.
Inlay grounds
The shallow depth makes the work exacting. Score the outline cleanly, pare the boundary, then remove the centre lightly. Set the router plane from the inlay thickness or a test piece. A clean, level ground lets the inlay bear evenly and reduces the temptation to sand the surrounding surface excessively after fitting.
Mistakes that make recesses uneven
Asking the router plane to remove all the waste. Heavy shavings strain the cutter, make the plane jump, and waste time. Chisel first; route last.
Setting final depth immediately. A shallow preliminary setting reveals high spots and provides a safer path to the finished depth.
Using a dull or poorly secured cutter. A torn floor, chatter, or a changing cut depth usually calls for tool attention before more pressure.
Routing with unsupported soles. If the sole bridges an opening, tips into a cavity, or rests on debris, the resulting floor cannot be trusted. Clear shavings often and provide support where necessary.
Ignoring the far edge of cross-grain work. A carefully cut housing can still splinter at its exit. Work inward from both sides and sever fibres at the boundary beforehand.
Correcting a low spot by lowering the whole recess. If the recess is accidentally cut too deep in one area, lowering everything may spoil the fit. Consider whether the mating part can be adjusted, whether a thin packing piece is appropriate, or whether the error is small enough to leave alone.
Care after use
Back the cutter off so its edge is not left projecting below the sole. Brush dust from the depth mechanism and wipe the sole clean. A light protective film on bare metal helps prevent rust, particularly in an unheated workshop. Keep cutters wrapped or stored where their edges cannot strike other tools.
The router plane is a finishing tool in the older sense: it gives a joint its final truth. Its quiet advantage lies in the reference surface beneath its sole. Once that principle is understood, a rough hollow made by quicker tools can be brought patiently to an even, useful plane.
