How to Make a Wooden Marking Gauge with a Wedge Lock

A marking gauge is one of the quiet necessities of hand-tool work. It carries a line parallel to an edge more faithfully than a pencil can, and its fine pin or knife mark gives a saw, chisel, or plane a clear place to begin.

This version uses a hardwood beam that slides through a wooden fence, held at the required setting by a wedge. It is a modest project, but it asks for the same habits needed in larger work: square faces, attentive grain direction, a clean mortise, and a fitting made by gradual adjustment rather than force.

The dimensions below are suggestions rather than rules. Make the gauge to suit the scale of work you expect to do. A small gauge is pleasant for boxes and drawers; a longer beam is useful when marking cabinet parts.

Materials and tools

Choose close-grained hardwood for the fence, beam, and wedge. Beech, maple, cherry, ash, oak, or similarly firm offcuts are suitable. Softwood can work for a first attempt, but the pin hole and the bearing face of the fence will wear sooner.

You will need:

  • A hardwood fence blank, roughly 35 to 45 mm thick, 45 to 60 mm wide, and 80 to 110 mm long
  • A hardwood beam, roughly 10 to 14 mm thick, 18 to 25 mm wide, and 220 to 300 mm long
  • A wedge blank from the same or a compatible hardwood
  • A short length of brass rod, a steel pin, or the smooth shank of a small nail
  • Wood glue, if you choose to reinforce the pin
  • Linseed oil, wax, or another light finish

Useful tools include a marking knife, try square, awl, drill and bits, backsaw or tenon saw, chisels, mallet, block plane, rasp or file, and sandpaper. A brace and bit is especially pleasant for this kind of work, though a hand drill will do.

A note on proportion

The fence should feel broad enough to register steadily against an edge without becoming cumbersome. Its long face is the reference surface, so leave enough material around the mortise to keep it stiff and flat. The beam should slide freely but not rattle. A narrow beam looks elegant, but one that is too thin can flex while marking.

The pin should sit near the lower face of the beam. This keeps the working point close to the fence and reduces the tendency for the beam to twist under pressure.

Prepare the stock

1. True the fence and beam

Plane the fence blank square and flat. Select one long face as the reference face: this is the face that will run against the workpiece. Plane it carefully, then soften only its sharp outer edges. Do not round the reference face itself; a broad, flat bearing surface is what makes the gauge dependable.

Plane the beam straight, square, and smooth. Its faces do not need a polished finish, but they must be consistent along the length. A beam that varies in thickness will either bind in the fence or become loose at some settings.

Mark a face and edge on both parts while you work. This simple habit helps keep all later layout referenced from the same surfaces.

2. Lay out the mortise in the fence

Mark the beam mortise through the centre of the fence width. Place it a little above the vertical centreline rather than directly in it, leaving more wood below the beam. The lower portion of the fence takes much of the pressure while marking and benefits from this extra substance.

The mortise should match the beam thickness closely. For a 12 mm thick beam, make the mortise about 12 mm wide. Its length should be slightly greater than the beam width, allowing the beam to pass through while leaving room for the wedge to bear against one side.

A useful arrangement is a rectangular through-mortise for the beam with a wedge opening cut into the top of the fence. The wedge presses the beam downward or sideways against a mortise wall, depending on its orientation. The essential point is that the wedge should tighten the beam without forcing the fence apart.

3. Drill and chop the beam mortise

Bore a series of holes inside the mortise lines, stopping just short of the layout marks. Drill from both faces if your bit is not long enough to pass cleanly through. Back up the exit face with scrap wood to reduce splintering.

Chop the remaining waste with a sharp chisel. Work from each face in turn, keeping the chisel square to the reference face. Test the beam often. It should enter with light hand pressure and slide without visible side-to-side play.

Do not try to make the fit perfect by driving the beam through. A beam that needs a mallet will soon bruise, seize with seasonal movement, or make setting the gauge frustrating. Pare the mortise walls sparingly until the beam moves smoothly.

4. Form the wedge slot

On the top of the fence, mark a slot that meets one side of the beam mortise. Saw down into this opening, then remove the waste with a chisel. The slot needs only enough room for the wedge to enter and bear on the beam.

Keep the wedge action simple. A shallow wedge angle, around one part rise to six or eight parts length, is easier to control than a steep one. Too steep, and the wedge may loosen abruptly; too shallow, and it may travel too far before it grips.

Make the wedge long enough to hold comfortably between finger and thumb. Its working end should be narrow but not fragile. Plane the wedge faces smooth and straight, then test it in the slot. It should tighten the beam with a modest tap or firm thumb pressure, not require pounding.

If the wedge binds before the beam is secure, remove a little material from the wedge’s lower face. If it bottoms out without gripping, make a slightly thicker wedge rather than trying to force a poor fit.

5. Refine the fit

With the beam in place, push in the wedge and try to move the beam. There should be no noticeable shift when you pull it lightly or press it downward. Release the wedge and confirm that the beam can be adjusted easily.

This is the heart of the tool. A wedge that holds reliably is more valuable than a flawless-looking fence. Spend time here, taking thin shavings and testing often.

Fit and sharpen the marking pin

6. Drill for the pin

At one end of the beam, mark the pin location on the lower face, about 10 to 15 mm back from the end. Drill a hole slightly smaller than the pin or rod. Aim for a shallow upward angle toward the far end of the beam so the point emerges below the beam and trails slightly during use.

A trailing point is less likely to catch in the grain. The pin should project only about 1 to 2 mm below the beam. A long projection makes a deeper line, but it also catches more readily and can tear fibres.

For a steel nail shank, cut off the head with pliers or a hacksaw before fitting. Secure the beam in a vise with protective wooden jaws, and keep fingers clear of the cutting line. File the exposed end to a fine, slightly rounded point. A needle-like point is not necessary; a small, durable point that scores rather than gouges is preferable.

Press-fit the pin into its hole. If the fit is loose, place a small drop of glue in the hole, then insert the pin and wipe away excess immediately. Let any glue cure fully before sharpening or using the gauge.

Shape and finish the gauge

7. Ease the parts without spoiling the references

Chamfer the upper edges of the fence and beam with a block plane, chisel, or sandpaper. These small bevels make the tool comfortable to hold and protect corners from splintering.

Leave the bottom reference face of the fence flat. You may ease its two long outer edges very lightly, but avoid creating a rounded sole. The fence needs full, stable contact with the workpiece edge.

Trim the beam end opposite the pin to a gentle curve or small chamfer if desired. This has no effect on accuracy, but it removes a vulnerable sharp corner.

8. Apply a light finish

A thin coat of linseed oil or paste wax is enough. Apply sparingly, allow it to settle, then wipe the surfaces dry. Keep finish out of the mortise until you know the beam fit is correct; oil or wax can change a close fit temporarily and make diagnosis harder.

Once the finish is dry, rub a little wax on the beam and inside the mortise if the slide feels rough. The beam should move quietly and lock positively.

Setting and using the gauge

Set the fence against a rule, combination square, or a carefully marked sample piece. Slide the beam to the desired distance, press the wedge home, and check the setting before marking valuable stock.

Hold the fence firmly against the workpiece edge. Tilt the gauge very slightly in the direction of travel so the pin trails. Draw it toward you in one calm pass with light pressure. Several delicate passes are usually cleaner than one heavy pass, especially across difficult grain.

For joinery lines, use the gauge from the same reference face whenever matching parts. If you mark one board from its show face and another from its opposite face, small variations in thickness can appear as misaligned joints.

Useful mistakes to avoid

Making the beam too tight

A tight beam can seem reassuring at first, but it makes fine adjustment difficult and encourages bruising. The wedge provides the grip; the beam itself should slide easily.

Using a wedge that is too steep

A steep wedge may lock suddenly or work loose under repeated use. A longer, gentler wedge gives more control and spreads pressure more kindly through the fence.

Placing the pin too far from the fence

A high or widely offset pin increases leverage and makes the beam more likely to twist. Keep the pin low and near the working end of the beam.

Over-rounding the fence

A beautifully softened fence can become unreliable if its bearing face is no longer flat. Preserve one clear reference surface and soften only the non-working edges.

Driving the pin deeply into the work

A marking gauge is for laying out a fine, repeatable line. Heavy pressure can tear grain and pull the fence away from the edge. Let the sharp point do the work.

A well-made wooden gauge becomes more familiar with use. The wedge develops a polished bearing surface, the beam begins to slide with an even feel, and the fence acquires the small marks of ordinary work. Kept dry, lightly waxed, and fitted with a sharp pin, it will remain a useful companion for laying out joints, rebates, grooves, and quiet parallel lines.
