Making a Wooden Bone Folder from Hardwood

A wooden bone folder is a modest tool, but it is one of the most useful objects on a bookbinding bench. It scores fold lines, presses signatures flat, turns in cloth and paper at board edges, sharpens corners, and burnishes pasted work without the hard glare of metal.

Traditional folders are often made from bone, though wood offers a practical animal-free alternative. A well-made wooden folder will not behave exactly like polished bone: it is usually lighter, and its edge can wear sooner. Yet dense, close-grained hardwood can be made smooth enough for ordinary paper work and gentle enough for handmade papers, decorative sheets, and thin book cloth.

The important qualities are not elaborate shape or perfect symmetry. The tool needs a comfortable body, a thin but rounded working edge, and a finish so smooth that it cannot catch a paper fibre.

Choose wood for smoothness, not dramatic grain

For this tool, select a dense hardwood with fine, closed grain. Maple, beech, birch, cherry, pear, apple, or similarly close-grained offcuts are sensible choices. Fruitwoods are especially pleasant to shape when available, though any sound, dry piece of fine-grained hardwood can serve.

Avoid open-pored woods such as oak or ash for a first folder. Their visible pores may remain as tiny interruptions even after sanding. These can hold paste, collect grime, or leave faint texture on damp paper. Avoid resinous softwood as well: it dents easily and may have knots, pitch pockets, or uneven grain that makes a clean edge difficult to maintain.

Use wood that is dry, free of cracks, and without a knot in the planned working end. A short offcut is enough. A blank about the length of a hand, roughly 15 to 18 centimetres long, gives good control. A width of 2.5 to 3 centimetres and a thickness around 6 to 10 millimetres leave enough material for shaping. These are not fixed dimensions; a smaller folder is useful for miniature work, while a broader one is comfortable for large sheets and board work.

Three useful profiles

A single tool can do most beginner tasks, but its outline should reflect the work you expect to do.

For a first wooden bone folder, make a long oval or narrow leaf shape with one pointed end and one broad rounded end. The pointed end should never be needle sharp. It needs enough roundness to enter a corner without cutting, puncturing, or leaving a crease that is too concentrated.

Prepare the blank

1. Mark the outline

Plane or sand the blank faces lightly if they are rough. Then draw the tool shape directly onto one broad face with pencil. Keep the centre section wide enough for a secure grip. Taper one end gradually to a rounded point, and round the other into a shallow spoon or paddle.

Mark a centreline down the length. This simple guide helps keep the profile balanced as material is removed. A folder can be slightly asymmetrical and still work well, but an accidental twist is uncomfortable and makes burnishing uneven.

2. Saw close to the line

Use a small saw to remove the larger corners and establish the silhouette. Keep just outside the pencil line. It is easier to remove more wood with a rasp than to correct a deeply cut outline.

Secure the blank in a vice with soft jaw covers, or clamp it between protective scraps. Do not hold a short piece in the hand while sawing or rasping. The work is small, and a slipping tool can reach fingers quickly.

3. Shape the faces and edges

Use a rasp or file to soften the sawn outline. Begin by rounding the long edges so that the tool sits comfortably in the hand. Next, reduce the thickness gradually toward both working ends.

The central grip can remain somewhat full. The outer edges, however, should become thinner and more refined. Think of a smooth river stone rather than a knife blade: the folder needs a gentle convexity, not a sharp bevel.

At the pointed end, form a narrow rounded nose. At the broad end, create a thin, slightly curved working edge. Keep checking the piece from the side. A useful folder is often thinnest near the final 10 to 15 millimetres of each end, but the wood must retain enough thickness not to flex or split under ordinary pressure.

Work with the grain whenever possible. A rasp used aggressively across unsupported grain can tear small fibres loose. Such tears may seem insignificant, but paper will find them.

4. Refine with a scraper

A cabinet scraper is particularly useful after filing. Draw it along the broad faces and curved edges in light strokes to remove file marks and high spots. It can leave a cleaner surface than coarse abrasive paper, especially on close-grained wood.

Scrape slowly around the pointed end. The aim is to remove ridges and produce a continuous curve from face to edge. Run a fingertip across the tool often. If you can feel a sudden change in contour, paper may feel it too.

Sand until the surface stops catching

Sand through several fine grades of abrasive paper. Begin only as coarse as necessary to remove file marks, then move steadily finer. Wrap the abrasive around a cork block, folded card, or another firm support for broad areas. For the curved ends, use the paper lightly over a fingertip, but avoid creating flat facets where you want a continuous curve.

Do not rush the final sanding. The working edges need to be polished rather than merely smooth-looking. Inspect them in raking light, then draw a scrap of thin paper across each edge. If the paper snags, shows a grey scuff, or picks up visible dust from the wood, continue refining.

A quick test is to fold a clean sheet of ordinary writing paper with the tool. The fold should become crisp without tearing its outer fibres. Then burnish a small area of paper with light pressure. A good wooden folder should leave the sheet flatter and slightly more compact, not scratched or glossy in streaks.

Finish with a restrained hand

A hard wax finish is suitable because it seals the surface lightly and can be renewed without building a thick coating. Apply a very small amount with a soft cloth, let it settle briefly, then buff thoroughly. The finished tool should feel dry and silky, not oily or tacky.

Avoid thick varnish, heavy oil finishes, or anything that remains soft. A soft finish can transfer to paper, pick up dust, or drag when used on pasted sheets. If you use an oil-and-wax product, allow it to cure fully according to its instructions before bringing the folder near paper or adhesive work.

After the finish has dried, give the working ends a final light buff with very fine abrasive paper or plain brown paper. This removes any raised grain and restores the clean sliding surface that matters most.

Use the wooden folder according to the task

For creasing, place the tool beside a scored or carefully aligned fold and draw it along the line with steady, moderate pressure. Begin near the centre and work outward when the paper is especially thin or prone to shifting.

For burnishing, use the broad, rounded part of the tool. Keep it moving rather than pressing in one spot. A wooden folder is well suited to flattening folded signatures, smoothing a pasted paper after it has been positioned, and pressing down turn-ins along board edges.

For corners, use the rounded point with a light rolling motion. It should guide material into the corner, not force it. If paper is wet with paste, work especially gently; damp fibres mark more readily than dry ones.

A wooden folder is less suited to scraping away dried adhesive, cutting paper, or applying strong leverage beneath a glued layer. Those tasks can chip the edge or leave a burr. Keep a separate palette knife, craft knife, or metal spatula for work that requires a hard scraping tool.

Mistakes that leave marks on paper

The most common problem is a working edge made too sharp. A pointed profile may look elegant, but a sharp ridge concentrates pressure and can score paper. Round the edge until it is smooth to the touch while still narrow enough to define a fold.

Another common mistake is stopping at a visually smooth surface. File marks, torn grain, and tiny pores may not be obvious until the folder is drawn across a pale sheet. Test on offcuts before using it on good paper.

Do not use the tool straight after applying wax or oil. Even a faintly greasy surface can stain absorbent paper or interfere with pasted work. Let the finish cure, then buff it until no residue transfers to a clean cloth.

Finally, do not expect one profile to do every job perfectly. A broad rounded folder is gentle and useful for most binding work, while a slim pointed version reaches into corners more easily. Once the first tool proves its usefulness, a second shape can be made from another small offcut.

Care and renewal

Keep the folder dry and wipe it clean after use, particularly after working near paste. If it develops a rough patch, lightly sand that area with fine abrasive paper and buff it smooth. Renew the wax sparingly when the surface begins to feel dry or drag on paper.

With a close-grained wood, careful shaping, and a patient final polish, this simple tool becomes one of the quietest parts of paper work: an object that does not call attention to itself, but leaves folds cleaner, corners neater, and hands more certain.
