How to Make and Use a Traditional Scratch Awl for Woodwork

A pencil is quick, forgiving, and useful for most rough work. But its line has width. When a drilling point, knife cut, or chisel edge must fall in one particular place, a narrow prick made by an awl is often clearer than graphite.

A traditional scratch awl is simply a pointed piece of steel set into a comfortable wooden handle. It needs no complicated mechanism. Its usefulness depends on three quiet qualities: a sharp point, a handle that sits securely in the hand, and a light touch in use. Made from a hardwood offcut and a suitable steel point, it is a small workshop tool that can serve for years.

What a scratch awl is for

A scratch awl is used to make a fine indentation or a light incised mark in timber. It is especially useful for:

  • starting a drill exactly on a layout mark;
  • transferring a measured point from one board to another;
  • locating screw holes before boring;
  • marking the ends of a line with precision;
  • pricking the corners of mortises, hinge recesses, and other joinery; and
  • working from a knife line where a pencil would obscure the exact position.

It is not a substitute for a marking knife when a long, clean layout line is required. A knife has a flat bevel that can register against a square or straightedge and leaves a cut that guides a chisel. The awl is better thought of as a point tool: it establishes locations, begins holes, and makes small marks that remain visible without broadening the intended dimension.

Materials and simple choices

The handle need not be elaborate. A sound piece of close-grained hardwood is enough: beech, maple, ash, oak, cherry, or a dense fruitwood offcut will all make a durable handle. Avoid a short-grained or checked scrap, particularly around the end where the steel will enter.

For the point, use a purpose-made hardened steel blank if one is available. A stout nail can also be used for a modest workshop awl, although not every nail will take or hold a keen point equally well. A hardened point will generally stay sharp longer. The steel should be straight, free from deep rust, and long enough to give a useful exposed point while still leaving a generous section buried in the handle.

You will also need a file or sharpening stone, sandpaper, a drill and bit for the handle hole, and either epoxy or hide glue. Epoxy is the more dependable choice for securing smooth steel in a small drilled hole. Hide glue suits a more traditional repairable approach, but it is less tolerant of a loose-fitting hole or highly polished metal. A little linseed oil or wax will finish the wood.

A sensible size

A handle about the length of a small screwdriver handle is comfortable for many hands. It should be thick enough to hold between thumb and forefinger without cramping, but not so bulky that it feels clumsy when placing a point precisely. The exposed steel need only be long enough to reach into shallow holes and provide clearance above the work; an overly long point bends more easily and is more hazardous on the bench.

Prepare the steel point

1. Shape the point before fitting it

If using a nail, first cut or file off its head if necessary. Leave a straight shank to embed in the handle. Clamp the steel carefully, with protection at the jaws if you wish to avoid marking it, and file the working end into a gradual taper.

The ideal awl point is not needle-thin from end to end. It should taper steadily to a fine tip while retaining enough thickness behind the point to resist bending. A short, abrupt point tends to tear fibres rather than part them cleanly. A long, even taper enters wood with less force and makes a neater indentation.

Turn the steel as you file so the taper remains even. Finish on a sharpening stone or fine abrasive paper laid on a firm surface. The point does not need a polished mirror finish, but it should feel smooth and sharp rather than rough or faceted.

Do not try to heat-treat an unknown nail merely for this project. Heating can alter the steel unpredictably, and quenching hot metal brings avoidable risk. A well-filed ordinary steel point is perfectly serviceable for light layout work, while a known hardened blank is the better choice when durability matters.

2. Leave the embedded end rough

The end that goes into the handle needs no sharpening. If it is very smooth, lightly roughen it with coarse sandpaper or make a few shallow file marks. This gives epoxy a better surface to grip. Do not cut deep notches that substantially weaken a thin shank.

3. Cut and shape a hardwood blank

Cut a straight, sound piece of hardwood slightly longer than the finished handle you want. A square blank is easy to drill before shaping, so begin there rather than trying to hold a round handle steady.

Mark the centre of one end by drawing diagonals from corner to corner. Use an awl or centre punch to make a small starting dent at the intersection. This helps the drill begin without wandering.

Shape the handle after drilling, using a rasp, file, spokeshave, or sandpaper. A gentle oval is usually more comfortable than a perfect cylinder because it gives the fingers a subtle sense of orientation. Keep the point end somewhat narrower than the palm end. Round all hard edges, but do not make the handle so smooth and symmetrical that it can twist unnoticed in the hand.

4. Drill the socket

Select a bit just smaller than the steel shank. A close hole is important: the point should enter with firm resistance, not rattle loosely. Drill straight into the marked end, stopping at a depth that leaves solid wood beyond the embedded steel. For a small awl, a socket around one-third to one-half the handle length is generally ample, provided the handle is sound and the shank is not unusually thick.

A drill press makes alignment easier, but a hand drill works well if the blank is held securely in a vise and you pause often to check that the bit is upright. Keep fingers clear of the drilling path and do not hold the small blank in your hand.

Test-fit the steel dry. If it stops too soon, deepen the hole a little at a time. If the fit is tight enough to require a light tap, place the handle on a protected firm surface and tap only gently. Forcing a thick shank into undersized wood can split the handle.

5. Fit and secure the point

Clean away drilling dust. Mix a small amount of epoxy and place it in the socket and on the roughened shank. Insert the point, checking from several directions that it sits in line with the handle. Wipe away squeezed-out adhesive before it cures.

If using hide glue, make the fit particularly close and work promptly. Warm glue and clean wood help, but the bond should not be expected to compensate for a poorly drilled, loose socket. In either case, set the awl aside point-up or supported so that adhesive does not run along the finished steel.

Allow the adhesive to cure fully according to its instructions before using the tool.

6. Sand, oil, and protect

Sand the handle through a few grades until it is comfortable in the hand. The aim is not a glossy furniture finish; it is a surface that does not raise splinters and remains pleasant when dusty or slightly oily from workshop use.

Rub in a thin coat of linseed oil, allow it to soak briefly, then wipe off all excess. Let it dry fully before adding another light coat if desired. Wax can be rubbed over a cured oil finish, or used on its own, for a soft low-sheen surface. Keep finish away from the steel point and from the inside of the socket.

How to use the awl accurately

Start drill holes without wandering

Lay out the hole centre with a knife line, pencil cross, rule, or marking gauge. Place the awl point precisely at the intersection or intended centre. Hold the handle nearly upright and press while giving the tool a small twisting motion between finger and thumb.

The goal is a conical starting hollow, not a deep puncture. On most wood, a shallow indentation is enough to receive the point of a brad-point bit, twist bit, or gimlet. A deep hole can pull the drill slightly off position, especially if the awl point was not exactly centred.

For a line of holes, make all the light prick marks first. Step back and inspect their spacing before drilling. It is much easier to correct one faint mark than a bored hole.

Transfer a point from one piece to another

When two parts must meet at a particular location, hold or clamp them in their assembled position. Press the awl through the relevant hole, or prick the required point at the edge of a layout line. Separate the pieces and deepen the transferred mark only if needed.

This is useful for fitting hinges, locating paired screw holes, and carrying the position of a stopped groove or mortise corner from one component to another. Work with the parts firmly supported. An awl used against an unstable assembly can slip and leave a misleading mark.

Mark without bruising the timber

An awl can leave a surprisingly clean mark when used lightly. Pressing hard crushes fibres around the point, particularly in softwoods, and may create a bruise that remains visible under a clear finish. Use only enough force to make a visible location mark.

When working near a finished edge, angle the awl slightly inward so that a slip is less likely to score the arris. For a point right at the end of a knife line, place the awl into the existing cut rather than beside it. The knife cut will help locate the tip.

Common mistakes to avoid

A blunt awl is the most common fault. It demands pressure, tears fibres, and encourages slipping. Refresh the point as soon as it begins to feel rounded. A few light strokes on a fine stone are usually enough.

Avoid treating the awl as a pry bar, lever, or heavy punch. The thin point can bend, especially in hard wood or when used in a deep pilot hole. If the point does bend, straighten it cautiously only if the bend is slight; repeated bending weakens steel. Often it is better to re-file the damaged section and accept a slightly shorter point.

Do not use the awl to make a long layout line freehand. It will wander with the grain and leave a rough scratch. Use a marking knife, gauge, or pencil for the line itself, then use the awl only where a precise point is needed.

Finally, give the tool a resting place. A scratch awl is easy to lose under shavings, and its point deserves respect. Store it in a small tool rack, a fitted drawer space, or with a simple point cover. A tool this small remains useful chiefly because it is sharp, sound, and ready when the work calls for one exact mark.
