Cotton rag paper is forgiving enough for a first attempt, yet capable of becoming a useful sheet rather than a novelty. The difference lies mostly in preparation: clean fibre, thoroughly beaten pulp, a well-stirred vat, and patient pressing. A sheet does not need to be perfectly smooth to be good, but it should hold together when dry, lie reasonably flat, and accept the intended mark without immediately swallowing it.
For notes, drawing, and small cards, begin with plain white or pale cotton rag. Old cotton clothing, worn bed linen, or cotton sewing offcuts can all serve, provided they are genuinely cotton and free from heavy finishes, elastic, synthetic stitching, stains, or printed decoration. White cotton is the simplest starting point. Coloured cloth makes coloured pulp, and strong dyes may bleed into the water.
What cotton rag gives the paper
Paper is a web of cellulose fibres held together as the water drains and the sheet dries. Cotton fibres are relatively long and strong, which helps a handmade sheet endure folding, writing, and handling better than paper made from many short, already-processed scraps. The fibres still need to be separated well. Large fragments of cloth make lumpy, weak paper because they have not opened into a fine enough pulp.
A blender is sufficient for small batches, though it does not replace a proper pulp beater. Work in short bursts, use plenty of water, and reserve an old blender for craft use if possible. Fibres and traces of dye are not desirable additions to food preparation.
The goal is not a perfectly featureless slurry. For ordinary writing or drawing paper, aim for pulp that feels soft and even between the fingers, with no recognisable threads, knots, or hard cloth chips. A few tiny flecks are pleasant; obvious fragments are a sign to blend longer.

Materials and a sensible working arrangement
Prepare the following before making pulp:
- Clean 100 percent cotton rag, cut into small pieces
- Water
- A blender or pulp beater
- A large tub or vat wider than the mould and deckle
- A mould and deckle
- Couching cloths, such as smooth cotton, wool felt, or non-woven absorbent cloth
- Additional felt sheets or absorbent layers for pressing
- A sponge
- Two flat pressing boards
- A press, clamps, or a stable stack of heavy books
- Gelatin or starch sizing, if the paper will be written on with fountain pen, dip pen, or wet media
Set the vat on a stable surface where splashed water will not matter. Beside it, make a couching stack: lay one damp couching cloth flat on a board or tray, with more cloths ready nearby. Damp cloth receives the wet sheet more readily than a dry one and reduces the chance of tearing.
The mould is the screen-bearing frame. The deckle is the open frame placed on top; it contains the pulp and creates the sheet edge. Keep the screen clean and free from loose threads. Even a small obstruction can leave a thin patch in every sheet.
Prepare and beat the cotton
1. Sort, wash, and cut the rag
Choose uncoated cotton. Remove labels, seams, buttons, zips, elastic, and synthetic thread where practical. Launder used fabric without softener, then cut it into pieces roughly 1 to 2 centimetres across. Smaller pieces blend more evenly and put less strain on the blender.
If the cloth is especially sturdy, soak it in warm water for several hours or overnight before blending. This softens the material and gives the blades less work to do. Do not rely on soaking alone: the rag must still be mechanically reduced to pulp.
2. Blend a small, wet batch
Fill the blender partway with water. Add only a loose handful of soaked rag at a time. Blend in short pulses, stopping to check the mixture and add water if it becomes thick or stalls around the blades.
The pulp should circulate freely. A blender packed with rag tends to produce tangled clumps instead of separated fibre. Transfer the finished pulp to a bucket, then repeat until there is enough for several sheets.
For a first session, making six to ten small sheets is more manageable than attempting a large stack. Cotton pulp keeps for a short while when covered with water, but it is best used fresh. If held longer, keep it cool and discard it if it develops an unpleasant smell.
3. Make the vat slurry
Fill the vat with enough water to immerse the mould comfortably. Add a few handfuls of pulp and stir it through with your hand. The mixture should look thin and mobile, not like porridge.
There is no fixed measure because mould size, fibre condition, and desired paper weight all vary. Begin with a modest amount of pulp. A thin sheet can be improved by adding more pulp to the vat; an overly thick sheet is slower to drain, harder to couch, and may dry unevenly.
A useful practical test is to pull one trial sheet. If the screen looks sparsely covered, add pulp. If the wet mat seems dense and leathery, dilute the vat with water or use less pulp on the next pull.
Pulling an even sheet
4. Stir before every pull
Pulp settles quickly. Agitate the vat with one hand immediately before dipping the mould and deckle. This is one of the simplest habits for avoiding thin corners and heavy clumps.
Hold the deckle securely on the mould with the screen facing upward. Lower the joined frames into the water at a slight angle, then bring them beneath the surface. Level them and lift steadily through the slurry.
As the mould rises, give it a brief, gentle movement forward and back, then side to side. This helps distribute fibres across the screen. Stop before much water has drained away; too much shaking after drainage begins can gather fibres into ridges.

5. Let the sheet settle and drain
Hold the mould level over the vat. Water will drain through the screen, leaving a pale wet layer of fibre. Look across the surface rather than directly down at it: uneven areas are easier to see in raking light.
If there is a clear hole, return the mould to the vat, stir, and pull again. If only one corner is a little thin, it is usually better to accept the sheet and learn from it. Handmade paper retains evidence of its making, and a modest irregularity is often less troublesome than repeated handling of a fragile wet mat.
When the flow has slowed to a drip, lift away the deckle carefully. Do not drag it across the wet fibres. The exposed sheet should have a clear edge and an even, soft texture.
Couching without tearing the sheet
Couching is the transfer of the wet sheet from the mould onto cloth or felt. It is the moment that often feels uncertain at first, but a clean, decisive movement works better than hesitation.
6. Turn the mould onto the cloth
Place the screen side of the mould against the damp couching cloth. Align it before contact, then lower it evenly. Press the back of the mould lightly with a sponge to encourage water through the screen. Do not scrub: vigorous rubbing can disturb the fibre layer.
Hold one edge of the couching cloth in place. Lift one edge of the mould slowly and steadily. If the sheet remains on the cloth, continue peeling the mould away. If it clings to the screen, lay the mould back down, sponge lightly again, and retry.
A sheet that refuses to release may be too wet, too thick, or insufficiently formed. It can also mean the couching cloth is too dry or too smooth. Keep cloths lightly damp, clean, and free from creases.
Lay another damp couching cloth over the newly couched sheet. Pull the next sheet onto it, building a layered stack of cloth, paper, cloth, paper. Avoid sliding the layers after they meet; wet fibres can shift and wrinkle.
Pressing and drying
7. Press out water first
When several sheets are stacked, place a pressing board above and below the pile. Apply even pressure with a press, clamps, or a carefully balanced weight. The purpose at this stage is to remove water and bring fibres into close contact, not to flatten the paper by force.
Press for several minutes, then replace soaked outer cloths or blotters if they are saturated. A second, longer pressing usually gives better results than leaving the first wet stack under weight for many hours. Wet paper left against drenched material can dry slowly and may take on unwanted marks.
8. Choose a drying finish
For softly textured paper, separate the sheets after pressing and leave each attached to its couching cloth until dry. Hang the cloth or lay it flat on a clean drying surface. The weave of the cloth will leave a corresponding texture on the paper.
For a flatter surface, place each damp sheet between smooth absorbent layers and press it again under boards. Change the absorbent layers when they become damp. This method takes more attention but produces paper more suited to writing and small cards.
Avoid drying sheets directly on a hot radiator or with intense heat. Fast, uneven drying can encourage curling. Air movement is useful; harsh heat is not necessary.

9. Flatten after drying
Once completely dry, peel the paper from its cloth slowly, starting at a corner. If it has a gentle wave, place it between clean sheets of paper or blotting material and press it under boards for a day or longer.
A warm, dry iron can be used cautiously on a fully dry sheet, with a protective layer of plain paper between iron and handmade paper. Test a spare sheet first, particularly if the pulp contains coloured fibres or later receives sizing.
Light sizing for writing and drawing
Unsized cotton paper is absorbent. Pencil, charcoal, and some acrylic work well on it, but fountain-pen ink, dip-pen ink, and watery paint may feather or sink into the fibres. Sizing reduces that absorbency.
For a simple surface size, dissolve a small quantity of unflavoured gelatin in warm water according to its packet guidance, keeping the solution thin rather than jelly-like. Brush it lightly over the dry sheet, or apply it while the paper remains supported by its couching cloth. Let the paper dry again, then press it flat.
Starch sizing can also be used, but it should be strained and applied sparingly to avoid a streaky surface. In either case, test a small sheet before treating the best ones. More size is not always better: a heavily coated surface may feel stiff, shiny, or resistant to certain drawing materials.
Surface sizing is a practical choice for a small home batch. It allows you to leave some sheets naturally absorbent for dry media and size only those intended for ink.

A reliable first-batch approach
For the most dependable beginning, make small sheets from plain white cotton rag, use a thin vat slurry, and aim for a medium-light sheet rather than a heavy card. Pull several sheets before changing the pulp concentration; the first one or two are often merely calibration. Press the stack well, dry it slowly, and size only a few finished sheets as an experiment.
The resulting paper may carry cloth texture, soft deckled edges, and faint variations in thickness. These are not faults when the fibres are well joined and the sheet serves its purpose. A good handmade sheet feels coherent in the hand: light enough to write on, strong enough to keep, and visibly made from material that has been given another useful life.
