A wedged through tenon is most at home where a joint may be seen and understood: a stool leg passing through its seat, a bench rail meeting an end, or a small table stretcher joined to a thick apron. The visible end is not decoration alone. The wedges open the tenon after it has passed through the mortise, making a mechanical lock as well as a glued joint.
It is a forgiving joint in one respect: a small amount of fitting can be corrected with a plane or chisel. It is unforgiving in another: wedges exert real force. A tenon that is too thin, a mortise too near an edge, or a wedge driven in the wrong direction can split the surrounding work. The quiet work is therefore done before glue is opened—laying out sound proportions, choosing straight grain, and testing the complete assembly dry.
Choose the proportions before cutting
For a seat, top, or rail of moderate thickness, begin with a tenon that is substantial but leaves enough wood around the mortise. As a general starting point, make the tenon roughly one-third of the thickness of the member that carries it. A 30 mm seat, for example, might take a tenon around 10 mm thick. The final dimensions depend on the species, the load, and the amount of material surrounding the mortise, but a thin, elegant tenon is not the place to begin with wedges.
Leave generous wood at the edges of the mortise. This matters particularly in a stool seat, where the leg mortise may be close to an edge or a curved corner. The wedge expands the tenon inside the mortise; if that force is directed toward a narrow strip of short grain, the seat can crack.
The tenon should project beyond the finished face by about 3 to 6 mm. This gives enough material for the wedges and later trimming without leaving a long exposed stub that is easy to bruise. Make the tenon shoulders broad, flat, and square. They establish the final position of the parts and prevent the joint from looking uneven even when the visible end is neatly wedged.
Plan the kerfs and wedges so their expansion acts in the safer direction: toward the broad, well-supported length of the mortise rather than toward its nearest edge. On a rectangular tenon, two narrow wedges are usually easier to control than one wide wedge. Leave solid wood at both outside edges of the tenon rather than cutting kerfs close to its sides.

Gather and prepare the stock
Use straight-grained hardwood for the tenoned member and the mortised piece when possible. Avoid a tenon that contains a knot, wandering grain, or a check at the end; wedges will find and enlarge those weaknesses.
For wedges, select hard, straight-grained stock. A contrasting timber can make the finished joint handsome, but strength and grain direction come first. The wedge grain should run along its length, from tip to butt. A wedge with short grain across its length may crush or break as it is driven.
Prepare these tools before beginning:
- Marking knife and marking gauge
- Mortise chisel close to the intended mortise width
- Tenon saw and small backsaw or carcass saw
- Mallet suited to the mortise chisel
- Router plane, shoulder plane, or sharp chisel for refining
- Block plane for tuning tenon cheeks and shoulders
- Drill and small bit, useful for stopping kerfs cleanly
- Clamps, a dry mallet, and a scrap wood block for assembly
Sharpen the chisel and saw before layout. A wedged joint should be fitted by removing fine shavings, not by forcing a rough tenon into a mortise.
1. Lay out the mortise from the chisel
Mark the mortise from the chisel that will cut it. Rather than measuring a width and trying to reproduce it with separate tools, set the marking gauge to the chisel width or use the chisel directly to establish the two walls. This keeps the mortise and tenon in agreement.
Mark the mortise location with a knife, then deepen the lines lightly with the knife or a marking gauge. Strike a clear centreline on the receiving piece. If there are several legs or rails, label the faces and keep one reference face throughout the work. A joint can be accurately cut and still sit askew if its parts are marked from alternating faces.
For a through mortise, knife the outline on both faces. Transfer the location carefully around the edges with a square. The lines on the exit face matter: they prevent a chisel from breaking out beyond the intended opening.
2. Chop the mortise from both faces
Clamp the work firmly on a solid backing board. Begin a little inside one end of the mortise, with the bevel of the chisel facing the waste. Chop down in small increments, levering out waste only after there is room for it to move. Work toward the opposite end, but do not try to reach full depth in one pass.
When the mortise is about halfway through, turn the work over and repeat from the other face. Meeting in the middle greatly reduces breakout and helps keep the opening clean on both sides.
Keep the chisel plumb, checking frequently from two directions. A through mortise that leans may still accept its tenon, but the shoulders will not seat evenly and the projecting end will look crooked.
Pare the walls only after most of the waste is removed. Use the knife lines as boundaries, not targets to chop through. The mortise should be straight-sided for most of its depth. A very slight relief at the exit face can be helpful, especially where wedges will expand the tenon, but do not make a broad funnel. The tenon still needs firm bearing along the mortise walls.

3. Mark and cut the tenon
Use the finished mortise to confirm the tenon dimensions. Set the marking gauge from the mortise width, always registering the fence from the same reference face. Mark both cheeks and then knife the shoulder line all around the tenoned piece.
Saw the shoulders first. Start with a shallow, accurate kerf on the waste side of the knife line, then deepen it across the face. A clean shoulder cut is more important than a fast one; it is the line the eye will read in the finished furniture.
Saw the cheeks next, staying just outside the gauge lines. Split or saw away the waste, then plane or pare the cheeks to fit. A block plane works well on broad cheeks; a shoulder plane or chisel can refine the last high spots.
Test the tenon frequently, but never hammer it into a tight mortise during fitting. It should enter with firm hand pressure or light taps from a mallet against a protective block. If it binds, examine the burnished areas on the cheeks and remove material only there. Keep the shoulders untouched unless they are visibly preventing the joint from closing.
Aim for a tenon that seats fully with the shoulders meeting the work all around. A loose tenon cannot be made sound simply by driving larger wedges. The wedges should expand a well-fitted joint, not compensate for a poor one.
4. Cut the wedge kerfs
Once the tenon fits dry, mark the kerfs on its exposed end. For a rectangular tenon, place two kerfs evenly within the width, leaving solid wood at each outer edge. Stop the kerfs well short of the shoulder. A distance of roughly 3 to 6 mm is a sensible starting margin for small furniture, adjusted upward for larger stock.
The kerfs must run in the direction that will expand the tenon against the stronger, safer sides of the mortise. Pause here and think through the force: the wedge opens the kerf perpendicular to the saw cut. If that opening drives hard toward the nearest edge of a seat or top, change the kerf direction or reconsider the joint location.
Drill a small relief hole at the inner end of each kerf before sawing. The hole rounds the end of the cut and reduces the chance that a split will continue toward the shoulder. Then saw from the end of the tenon down to the hole. Keep the kerf narrow and centred. A hand saw with a fine kerf is sufficient.
5. Make slender, matching wedges
Make wedges from a single straight-grained strip so they behave alike. Their width should match the available width of each kerf rather than extending to the outer edges of the tenon. Their taper should be gradual. A thin wedge with a long, even slope gives more control than a steep wedge that suddenly forces the joint apart.
Plane the wedges, rather than relying on a rough sawn taper. They need not be identical in colour or figure, but their faces should be smooth and their tips strong enough to begin in the kerfs without crumbling.
Cut several spare wedges. During glue-up, it is useful to have a replacement at hand rather than stopping to remake one.

6. Dry assemble the complete joint
Put the joint together without glue. Seat the shoulders, insert the wedges lightly, and confirm three things: the wedges begin cleanly, the tenon does not split, and the mortised piece remains flat and unstrained.
Remove the wedges and inspect the tenon. Slight compression at the kerfs is normal. A crack running from a kerf toward the shoulder is not. If one appears, stop and reduce the wedge thickness or lengthen the solid section left below the kerf.
Do not drive wedges until they are fully seated during the dry run. The purpose is to check the path and resistance, not to exhaust the joint before glue-up.
7. Glue and wedge in a calm sequence
Arrange clamps, mallet, wedges, a damp rag, and a protective block before applying glue. Brush glue on the mortise walls and tenon cheeks. Avoid flooding the kerfs; excessive glue there can make the wedges hydraulic and messy without strengthening the joint.
Seat the tenon until the shoulders close. Check that the assembly remains square. Apply a light coat of glue to the wedge faces, insert them into the kerfs, and drive them alternately with controlled mallet taps. Use a small block between mallet and wedge if the wedge ends are delicate.
Listen and watch as you drive. The wedges should tighten steadily. Stop if the mortise begins to open, if a crack appears at an edge, or if the wedge suddenly becomes immovable before the joint is seated. More force is seldom the answer; remove the wedge while the glue is fresh if possible, then correct its taper or the kerf.
Leave the tenon and wedges proud. Wipe away squeeze-out from the shoulders and surrounding face with a damp cloth, taking care not to wash glue into open grain or leave a wet patch on unfinished timber.
Trim and finish after curing
Let the glue cure fully before trimming. Saw the proud tenon and wedges close to the surface with a fine saw, using a thin card or scrap veneer to protect the surrounding face if needed. Then pare or plane the last fraction flush. A sharp block plane set for a fine cut is particularly pleasant on a broad, flat seat.
Work from the surrounding wood toward the exposed tenon where grain direction permits. This reduces the chance of lifting fibres at the edge of the mortise. A final light scrape or fine sanding can blend the surface, but do not soften the joint so much that its crisp outline disappears.
Mistakes worth avoiding
- Cutting the mortise too close to an edge. A wedge can split even good hardwood if too little material remains around the opening.
- Using a loose tenon. Wedges are not filler. Fit the cheeks and shoulders before cutting the kerfs.
- Kerfing too near the shoulders. The remaining wood can split when the wedges are driven.
- Driving steep or oversized wedges. A gentle taper gives warning and control; a thick wedge can burst the mortise suddenly.
- Forcing the dry fit. If the tenon needs hard blows before wedges are added, it needs further fitting.
- Trimming before the glue has cured. Early trimming can disturb the joint and may tear fibres around the opening.
A well-made wedged through tenon does not need drama. Its shoulders sit quietly against the work, the wedges are even and deliberate, and the end grain remains clean around them. With careful layout and restrained force, it becomes one of the most useful visible joints in small furniture.
