A wooden plane stop is one of the quietest improvements you can make to a hand-tool bench. It does not grip a board in the manner of a vise. Instead, it offers a low shoulder for the end of the work to bear against. Your forward pressure with the plane keeps the board seated, while the stop prevents it from travelling away.
For face planing, this simple arrangement is often quicker than reaching for clamps. It also leaves the surface clear: no clamp heads to catch a plane, and no need to turn the work repeatedly in a vise. A low removable stop made from hardwood and dowels is a good first version. It can be used on an existing bench with dog holes, or on a separate planing board that can be set on any sturdy table.
The important proportion is not the overall size of the stop, but its height above the work surface. It should be just high enough to catch the workpiece and no higher. A stop that stands proud becomes an obstacle for the plane iron.

Choose the style that suits your bench
There are two useful forms of wooden plane stop.
Removable dowelled stop
This is a thin hardwood strip with two dowels beneath it. The dowels drop into a pair of bench dog holes, holding the stop at the front of the work. It is easy to make, easy to remove, and does not alter the bench permanently. It is particularly useful when the bench already has dog holes or when you work on a removable bench board.
For most people, this is the sensible starting point. It also allows the stop to be placed where it suits the length of the board being planed.
Flush-fitted stop in a mortise
A more permanent traditional arrangement is a hardwood block fitted into a mortise near one end of the benchtop. The block may be tapped up slightly when needed and lowered nearly flush when it is not. This is handsome, durable workholding, but it asks more of the bench and of the maker. Cutting a large mortise into a thin, light, or already compromised top is seldom worthwhile.
This article concentrates on the removable form, then explains how the same principles apply to a flush-fitted version.
Materials, tools, and proportions
Choose a straight-grained hardwood offcut. Beech and oak are both suitable: they resist denting and hold dowels reliably. Avoid a brittle, knotty piece, since the stop takes repeated end-on pressure.
For a stop serving ordinary boards, begin with a strip approximately:
- 300 mm long;
- 35 to 45 mm wide;
- 8 to 10 mm thick.
These are starting dimensions, not strict rules. The strip should bridge two dog holes comfortably and be wide enough to remain stable without becoming a tall barrier. If your bench uses a particular dog-hole diameter, make the dowels to match it. Commonly available beech or oak dowel works well, provided it is straight and fits without force.
You will need:
- a hardwood offcut for the stop;
- two hardwood dowels sized for your bench holes;
- wood glue;
- a saw and plane or other means of shaping the strip;
- a drill and bit matching the dowel diameter;
- square, marking knife or pencil, and rule;
- clamps for glue-up;
- linseed oil or wax for a restrained finish.
If your bench has no dog holes, make a planing board: a flat board large enough to support the work, with the stop fixed at one end. Clamp the planing board to the bench or place it against a bench edge. This leaves the bench untouched and can be stored when not in use.
Preparation: find the working height
Before drilling or gluing anything, put a thin test strip at the intended location and place a board against it. Set a plane on the board and move it toward the strip.
The stop should project only enough to resist the board. For ordinary face planing, a projection of roughly 3 to 6 mm is usually ample. Thin material may require less; thicker, rough stock can tolerate a little more. The plane body should pass over the work without its iron or mouth arriving at the stop.
A wooden stop is forgiving in a way that a metal one is not, but it should still be treated as something the plane must not strike. Set it low, and stop the stroke before the plane leaves the work.
Lay the strip across two dog holes near the end of the bench where the work will bear. Mark the hole centres from below if possible. If that is awkward, insert short dowel stubs or transfer points into the holes, set the strip in position, and press lightly to mark the underside. Check the layout twice. Dowel holes that are even slightly misplaced make an otherwise sound stop frustrating to use.

Make the removable wooden plane stop
1. Prepare the hardwood strip
Plane the strip flat and true. Ease its long upper edges with a small chamfer or a few passes of sandpaper. This is not decoration alone: eased edges are kinder to the hands and less likely to splinter.
Keep the lower face reasonably flat, since it rests directly on the bench. The upper face can remain simple. Do not add a tall upright lip; the thin strip itself is the stop.
2. Lay out the dowel positions
Mark the centres of the two bench dog holes on the underside of the strip. Keep the holes well in from each end, leaving enough solid wood around them. A symmetrical arrangement is easy to read, though exact symmetry matters less than matching the bench.
Use a square to carry the marks across the width if needed. Then prick each centre with an awl or point of a marking knife. This gives the drill bit a clean place to start.
3. Drill square, shallow dowel holes
Drill the holes perpendicular to the underside. A drill press makes this straightforward, but a hand drill guided carefully by a small square will do. Bore to a depth that gives a dependable glue joint while leaving sound material above it. For a thin stop, do not drill through the top face.
Test the dowel in each hole before gluing. It should enter firmly but not split the strip. If it is excessively tight, pare or sand the dowel lightly rather than forcing it.
4. Cut and fit the dowels
Cut two dowels long enough to enter the dog holes securely while still allowing the stop to sit flat on the bench. Their precise length depends on the bench, but they need not reach the bottom of the holes. A moderate engagement is enough because the strip bears against the benchtop, not on the dowels alone.
Round or chamfer the lower ends slightly. This helps them find the dog holes without bruising their edges. Dry-fit the complete stop on the bench. It should drop in with a firm hand push and lift out without a struggle.
If the dowels bind, correct the fit now. Do not rely on repeated forcing to wear them in; that only damages the holes and makes the stop less predictable.
5. Glue and check for square
Apply glue to the dowel holes and the upper portion of each dowel. Insert them, then place the stop on a flat surface with the dowels pointing upward or use the bench holes themselves as an alignment guide.
Check that both dowels are perpendicular to the strip. If one leans, the stop may rock or refuse to seat. Wipe away squeezed-out glue, then leave the assembly undisturbed until the glue has cured fully.
6. Finish lightly
A thin coat of linseed oil or a little wax is sufficient. The aim is to keep the wood pleasant to handle and less prone to grime, not to build a glossy film. Keep finish out of the dowel-to-bench bearing surfaces if it makes the fit slippery or swollen.
Once dry, make a final trial fit. Plane a sacrificial board against the stop and observe whether the work stays down and whether the plane approaches the stop safely.
Use the stop for face planing
Place the stop in the dog holes with its long edge square to the direction of planing. Set the board flat on the bench and slide its near end gently against the stop. For a right-handed worker, the stop is commonly arranged near the left-hand end of the bench so the plane travels away from the body; left-handed workers may prefer the reverse. Arrange the work so the planing stroke feels natural and the board bears firmly into the stop.
Stand so that your body can provide a controlled forward motion. At the beginning of the stroke, maintain enough forward pressure to keep the board seated against the stop. Do not press down so hard that the board flexes, particularly if it is thin or lightly supported.
Take a few short, controlled passes first. The board should remain in place through the cut. If it creeps sideways, add lateral support rather than raising the stop. A bench dog, a holdfast, a wedge, or a second low stop can keep wide or awkward stock from wandering.
When the work is thin, place it on a thin sacrificial sheet, such as hardboard or plywood, if the stop is taller than the work can comfortably tolerate. The packing sheet raises the work relative to the stop while preserving a low, clear planing path.
Use the stop for edge planing
A plane stop can also assist with edge work, although an edge held in a vise is often more convenient for long boards. For short pieces or light clean-up, lay the board on its edge and support it with a low companion block, a bench dog, or a simple batten so it cannot tip.
The key is stability. The stop resists forward travel, but it does not prevent the narrow board from rolling. Keep the workpiece low, support its broad face, and make modest passes. If the arrangement shifts or asks you to hold the board with one hand near the blade path, move to a vise or a safer support method.

Making a flush-fitted stop instead
For a dedicated hand-tool bench, the same low-stop principle can be built into the top. Make a hardwood block wide enough to resist splitting and long enough to register solidly in a mortise. Cut a snug straight-sided mortise near the working end of the benchtop, leaving ample material around it. The block should slide without rattling, but should not be so tight that seasonal movement leaves it stuck.
Fit the block nearly flush with the benchtop when lowered. When raised for use, it needs only a few millimetres of projection. A shallow finger notch, a hole accessible from below, or a means of tapping it upward can make adjustment easier.
Test the position with your longest plane before finalising the mortise. The stop must be positioned where it supports boards well but does not invite the plane iron to meet it at the end of a stroke.
Useful mistakes to avoid
Making the stop too high
This is the common error. A high stop catches the work readily, but it also catches planes. Begin low. You can raise a low arrangement with packing beneath the work; lowering a fixed tall stop means remaking it.
Using soft or weak wood
Pine and other soft offcuts will work briefly, but their bearing edge soon dents and their dowel joints are less durable. Use a dense hardwood for the small amount of material involved.
Depending on friction alone
A strip simply laid on the bench tends to travel with the work. Dowelled registration, a fixed batten, or a clamped planing board makes the restraint dependable.
Ignoring side-to-side movement
A plane stop prevents forward sliding, not every kind of movement. Wide boards, skew planing, and coarse cuts may need a side dog or wedge. Add restraint only where it is needed, keeping the bench surface as open as possible.
Planing into the stop
End every stroke with attention. Lift or ease the plane before its iron reaches the stop. This protects both the cutting edge and the stop, and it encourages a measured, repeatable stroke.
A wooden plane stop earns its place because it is uncomplicated. Made low, fitted accurately, and used with deliberate pressure, it turns the broad bench surface into a steady place for planing. It is a small piece of hardwood, but it restores a useful old habit: letting the work bear against the bench rather than fastening it down at every turn.
