A pencil is useful for rough dimensions, but its line has width. At the shoulder of a tenon or the baseline of a dovetail, that width leaves an unnecessary question: which edge of the graphite is the cut meant to follow?
A marking knife answers it with a narrow incision. The cut line is visible, can be felt with a fingernail, and gives the first stroke of a saw or chisel a small, positive place to begin. It is not a substitute for careful measuring or sound reference faces. It is simply the final, precise form of a layout line.
What a marking knife should do
A good marking knife needs three things: a thin blade, a keen edge, and a handle that permits control close to the work. The blade need not be long. In fact, a short exposed blade is often easier to guide around a square, into a dovetail corner, or along the edge of a board.
The knife should sever wood fibres rather than scratch them. A properly sharpened edge enters with modest pressure and leaves a clean, narrow line. If it requires force, it is dull, too thick at the edge, or being used at an awkward angle.
There are several useful forms:

A purpose-made knife is pleasant to use, but the important qualities are geometry and sharpness rather than ornament. Avoid a blade so thick that it pushes the square away from the intended line, or so flexible that it wanders under pressure.

Single bevel or double bevel?
For hand-cut joinery, the single-bevel knife is often the clearest choice. Its flat face can lie directly against the edge of a try square or combination square. This removes one variable: the blade is registered from the flat face, rather than balanced somewhere between two bevels.
The bevel must face away from the square. With the flat face held against the square, the bevel opens toward the waste side of the cut. This arrangement lets the knife line fall exactly at the square’s edge while leaving a small sloping wall on the waste side. That wall can later guide a saw or provide a clean place for a chisel to register.
Because the bevel must face the correct direction, a single-bevel knife is commonly sold as right- or left-handed. These labels can be confusing. Rather than choosing by the name alone, hold the knife against a straightedge in the orientation you will use most often. You want the flat face against the straightedge and the bevel facing the waste. A right-handed woodworker may still find that a particular knife is better suited to one side of a drawer, carcase, or dovetail board than the other.
A double-bevel knife is more forgiving for general use. It can be turned over when working from either side, and it is a sensible first knife when the work is varied. It does not, however, place a truly flat face against the square. For ordinary layout this may not matter. For close-fitting joinery, where each line becomes a sawing boundary, the single bevel offers a more deliberate reference.
A practical choice
Choose a single-bevel knife if you regularly cut dovetails, tenons, and housings by hand, and are willing to pay attention to bevel orientation. Choose a double-bevel knife if you want one adaptable tool for general layout, light trimming, and occasional joinery.
In either case, select a point fine enough to enter a corner without leaving a wide mark. The point should not be so needle-like that it is easily snapped or bent. A modest, durable point is usually more useful than an extremely delicate one.
Preparation: establish references before cutting
Knife lines become accurate only when the layout beneath them is accurate. Before marking, choose a face side and face edge for each board. Mark them discreetly if needed. Take measurements from those references rather than from whichever edge happens to be nearest.
Set the combination square or try square carefully. Check that its stock bears firmly against the reference edge and that no shaving, grit, or bruised wood is holding it away from the work. On rough or heavily figured timber, a light preliminary pass can help establish the line before the final cut.
Keep the knife sharp. A marking knife is not a pry bar, scraper, or parcel opener. Its edge benefits from light, regular sharpening on a fine stone. Maintain the existing bevel unless there is a clear reason to alter it, and remove the small burr carefully. The goal is a clean cutting edge, not an oversized polished bevel.
How to use a marking knife against a square

Set the square from the reference edge. Hold the stock firmly against the face edge of the board. Keep the square still; moving it midway through the cut is a common cause of doubled lines.

Place the knife with its flat face against the blade of the square. For a single-bevel knife, ensure the bevel faces the waste side. Hold the knife low enough that it is supported by the square, but not so low that the handle forces the point away from the line.

Make a light first pass. Draw or push the knife gently along the square. The first pass is for location, not depth. Let the blade find its path without forcing it.

Deepen the line with one or two further passes. Keep the knife in the existing incision and maintain contact with the square. A deeper cut is useful at a saw line, but there is no need to carve a trench.

Mark only where the cut is needed. For a tenon shoulder, carry the line cleanly around the required faces. For an exposed face, avoid running an unnecessary knife line where it may remain visible after assembly.

A knife line can leave a shallow arris on one side. This is useful, but it must be understood correctly: the exact boundary is the square-side edge of the incision. When sawing, leave the line intact on the finished part and cut on the waste side. When paring to the line, place the chisel so that it approaches the waste without enlarging the finished dimension.
Transferring dovetails with a knife
A marking knife is especially valuable when transferring completed tails to a pin board. The tails themselves become the template, which avoids relying on repeated measurements.
First, mark the dovetail baseline on both boards with a square and knife. Cut the tails, then remove the waste and refine the surfaces enough that the tail board can sit securely on the pin board.
Place the tail board on the end grain of the pin board with the face sides correctly oriented. Support it so it cannot rock. A bench hook, a square block, or a simple holding arrangement can help, but the essential thing is firm contact between the two boards.
Hold the tail board down with one hand and use the knife in the other. Run the blade directly along the face of each tail. For a single-bevel knife, arrange the flat face against the tail where possible. Use a light first pass, then deepen it only enough to create an unambiguous boundary. Do not lever the point into the corner; work into the corner gently from each direction if needed.
After removing the tail board, darken the waste areas with pencil if that helps visibility. The pencil does not replace the knife line; it merely identifies which side will be removed. Saw just to the waste side of the knife marks and pare back with restraint.

Using knife lines for mortise-and-tenon work
For tenon shoulders, knife the shoulder line around the workpiece from the face side and face edge. The line gives a clean stopping point for the shoulder cut. A shallow knife wall can also help prevent surface fibres from tearing as the saw exits the cut.
For mortises, knife the perimeter only after the location has been checked from the reference faces. A knife line makes it easier to set a chisel precisely at the boundary, but it does not make a mortise automatically square. Keep the chisel vertical, remove waste in small stages, and leave enough material at the ends to pare accurately to the lines.
Where a gauge is used for repeated parallel lines, its pin or wheel may establish the main layout. A knife can still be useful for squaring the ends of a mortise, defining tenon shoulders, and clarifying intersections.
Common mistakes to avoid
Pressing too hard on the first pass
A hard first pass encourages the knife to follow grain or slip from the square. Begin lightly, then deepen a line that is already located.
Cutting on the wrong side of the square
With a single-bevel blade, confirm the bevel faces waste before each important line. A quick check on scrap hardwood can prevent a surprising error on a finished piece.
Treating the knife line as waste
The line represents the finished boundary. Saw and chisel from the waste side, preserving the line until the joint is fitted.
Using a dull or damaged point
A dull knife crushes fibres and asks for excess force. A chipped or bent point makes corners imprecise. Sharpen early rather than compensating with pressure.
Ignoring grain direction and support
On difficult grain, use short strokes and keep the board well supported. If the knife begins to wander, stop and reset rather than trying to steer a deep cut back to the mark.
A small habit with lasting value
Practice first on offcuts. Mark a series of square lines, cut them with a saw, then inspect which side of the line remains. This modest exercise teaches the relationship between the knife, the waste, and the finished dimension more clearly than any diagram.
A marking knife earns its place not by making layout elaborate, but by making it decisive. Used with a sound square, a sharp edge, and a light hand, it gives joinery a boundary that both eye and tool can trust.
