A sound wooden drawer bottom is not glued into its drawer. It is a floating panel: held in grooves along the sides and front, then secured at the back so that it cannot rattle or slide forward. This arrangement lets the board widen and narrow with the seasons without splitting the drawer or forcing its joints apart.
Many failed replacements go wrong for simple reasons. The grain is run in the wrong direction, the board is fitted too tightly across its width, or the bottom is nailed all around its edge. A careful replacement need not be elaborate, but it does ask for a clear understanding of how the drawer is built.
Read the old drawer before making the new bottom
Remove the drawer and turn it over. On a traditional drawer, the bottom usually runs from front to back, with its grain in the same direction. Its side edges sit in grooves cut into the drawer sides, while the front edge enters a groove in the drawer front. The back edge often rests beneath the drawer back and is fastened there with a few small nails, brads, or screws.
This grain direction is important. The board’s movement occurs chiefly across its width, from side to side in the drawer. The grooves along the sides provide room for this movement. Its length, running from front to back, changes comparatively little and can therefore be fixed at the rear.
Before discarding a damaged bottom, use it as a pattern where possible. Note the following:
- the thickness of the board at its edges;
- the depth and height of the side and front grooves;
- whether the bottom is flat, lightly bevelled, or shaped with a tongue around its edges;
- the distance from the drawer front groove to the inside face of the drawer back;
- the way the rear edge was originally secured.
A bottom may have been replaced before. Do not assume every old nail hole or altered groove represents the original method. Look for the arrangement that best supports the drawer’s construction rather than copying a later expedient.

Choose and prepare the board
Use a dry, seasoned board that is flat and reasonably straight-grained. Softwoods such as pine, spruce, or fir are common in older furniture and are pleasant to plane. Hardwood can be used where the drawer calls for it, but a heavy hardwood bottom may make a light drawer less agreeable to use.
Avoid a board with a large knot near an edge that will be reduced to a thin tongue. Also avoid cupped stock. A bottom can be gently planed thin, but it should not be forced flat by the surrounding drawer; that pressure can make it bind or crack later.
Plane the face smooth enough that it will not catch on dust, stored linens, or the contents of the drawer. The underside need not be polished, but it should be free of rough tear-out and prominent ridges. If the drawer is shallow, preserve as much thickness as the original design permits.
Mark the grain direction
Lay the board so that its long grain runs from the drawer front to the drawer back. If the board has a slight cup that cannot be fully removed, place the hollow or concave face upward. In use, the contents of the drawer will then tend to support the middle rather than press the edges further down.
The board must be wide enough to reach both side grooves, but its width should not be treated as an exact, immovable measurement. It needs a little freedom across the grain. The amount depends on the board’s width, species, and the humidity of the room, but the principle remains the same: it should enter the grooves without being wedged there.
Measure the grooves and cut the blank
Measure the drawer’s internal length from the front groove to the back. Then measure the groove depth at both sides and at the front. Old drawers are not always perfectly square, so take measurements near the front and back rather than trusting a single number.
Cut the blank slightly oversize in length and width. A little extra gives room for careful planing. Test the blank against the underside of the drawer, marking where the front edge will disappear into its groove and where the rear edge will meet the drawer back.
The front-to-back length should be close enough that the front edge seats properly in its groove and the rear edge reaches the drawer back without a gap. Do not make it so long that it pushes the drawer front forward or bows the sides. A dry fit should feel composed, not strained.
Cutting new grooves, if the drawer needs them
If a drawer is being made anew, or if damaged grooves must be renewed, mark their position with a marking gauge. The side grooves should be parallel to the lower edges of the drawer sides. The front groove should meet them cleanly at the corners.
A plough plane is well suited to this work. Set its fence from the lower edge and make several light passes rather than trying to reach full depth at once. A router plane can refine the bottom of a stopped or uneven groove after the bulk has been removed. Keep the grooves consistent: a wandering groove will make the bottom look skewed even if the board itself is true.
The groove need only be deep enough to retain the edge securely. Excessively deep grooves weaken a thin drawer side and make fitting harder. Match the scale of the original drawer where an original survives.

Bevel the bottom edges for a sliding fit
Most traditional solid-wood bottoms are not reduced to their full thickness along every edge. Instead, the central field remains stout while the edges are bevelled or planed into thin tongues that enter the grooves. This gives the drawer a strong bottom without requiring wide, deep grooves.
Mark the width of each tongue from the edge inward. The tongue must be wide enough to enter the groove fully, while leaving a little clearance at the groove bottom. Mark the required thickness with a gauge, working from the face that will be uppermost inside the drawer.
Plane the underside of the edges down to the gauge line, leaving the upper face intact. This creates a shallow rebate around the board. At the front, make the tongue fit the front groove; at the sides, fit the side grooves. The rear edge is commonly left square or given only a small easing, depending on how it meets the drawer back.
A sharp hand plane gives better control than trying to saw the narrow tongues. Take thin shavings and test often. The aim is not a tight, polished joint. The bottom should slide into place with firm hand pressure, then move slightly when pressed from side to side. If it must be hammered home, it is too tight.
Fit in this order
- Plane the front tongue until it enters the front groove without bruising its edges.
- Fit the side tongues gradually, checking the board in the drawer after each adjustment.
- Check that the bottom lies flat against the drawer’s lower edges and does not rock.
- Trim the rear length only after the front and sides are properly seated.
- Ease any sharp lower corners that catch as the board is slid into place.
The drawer bottom should not rattle when the drawer is lifted, yet it must not be pinched at the side grooves. A slight, even sliding resistance is a better sign than an absolutely rigid fit.

Fasten only at the back edge
Once the bottom fits, slide it fully forward into the front groove. Its rear edge should rest against or just beneath the drawer back, according to the drawer’s construction. Secure it here with a small number of brads or screws driven through the drawer back into the end grain of the bottom.
Use only enough fasteners to prevent the board from shifting forward or dropping. Two are often sufficient on a modest drawer; a wider drawer may take another near the centre. Pre-bore for screws in old or brittle timber, and use modest force with brads so the drawer back is not split.
Do not glue the bottom into the side or front grooves. Do not nail through the sides into the board. Those methods trap the board across its grain. As humidity changes, the bottom then has no quiet place to expand, and something eventually gives: the board splits, the drawer sides bow, or the grooves break away.
If the drawer back is removable or has been replaced, make sure the fasteners do not prevent future repair. Small screws are often kinder to a drawer that may need to be opened again.
Finishing the replacement bottom
A drawer bottom does not usually require a heavy finish. A bare, smoothly planed surface is traditional and practical inside many pieces of furniture. If the drawer holds damp objects, metal tools, or other materials likely to mark the wood, a very light coat of a compatible finish may be useful, provided it is allowed to cure fully before the drawer is used.
Avoid building a thick film on the tongues or inside the grooves. Finish can make a close fit bind, particularly in a drawer that already works near its limit. If a finish is applied, keep it thin and leave the sliding edges clean or lightly waxed after fitting.
Reinstall the drawer and test it through its full travel. It should run without scraping, and the bottom should remain quiet when the drawer is lifted or tilted. Check again after the drawer has spent some time in the room where it will live; small seasonal adjustments are easier to make early, with a few strokes of a plane, than after the wood has been forced.
Mistakes that lead to split or noisy drawer bottoms
Running the grain from side to side
This places the main movement along the drawer’s length, where the front groove and rear fastening offer little accommodation. Run the grain from front to back instead.
Making the side tongues too tight
A bottom can feel sound in a dry workshop and bind later in a damper room. Leave enough clearance for the board to move in the grooves without becoming loose.
Fastening every edge
The bottom needs to be retained at the back, not imprisoned around its perimeter. Fasteners through the sides are a common cause of cracks.
Making the tongues too thin
A fragile tongue can split off during fitting or wear away in use. Preserve enough thickness at the edges for the scale of the drawer and its grooves.
Ignoring a distorted drawer
If the drawer sides are bowed, the back is loose, or the front joints have opened, a new bottom alone may not cure the problem. Repair the drawer structure first, then fit the bottom to the drawer as it should sit in service.
A well-fitted wooden drawer bottom is almost unnoticed. It lies flat, slides quietly in its grooves, and stays secure at the rear while the seasons pass. That small allowance for movement is what keeps an ordinary board from becoming the next repair.
